Korea’s biggest game developer conference runs through Thursday with focus on AI
While artificial intelligence continues to lower barriers to entry in game development, Nexon Korea co-CEO Kang Dae-hyun asserts that the industry’s most invaluable asset remains its most challenging to automate: context.
During his compelling keynote speech at the highly anticipated 2026 Nexon Developers Conference (NDC) on Tuesday, Kang spotlighted “context” and “compound interest” as the two pivotal forces poised to shape success in the rapidly evolving AI era of gaming.
“Today, games must primarily compete through the profound depth of their context, rather than simply on their technical craftsmanship,” he emphasized.
To illustrate this crucial point, Kang presented a vivid comparison using images of MapleStory hats. One hat was generated by a generic AI service, while the other was crafted with an extensive, deep understanding of Nexon’s iconic side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
“The hat produced by conventional AI might appear acceptable to those unfamiliar with MapleStory, but the hat developed with over two decades of intimate game knowledge is unmistakably a true MapleStory hat, perfectly suited for in-game avatars,” he explained.
Kang elaborated on “context,” defining it as the comprehensive ecosystem surrounding a game. This encompasses accumulated data from game developers over many years, the intricate exchanges and relationships among users, and shared memories forged within online communities. He underscored this collective value as “contextual capital.”
According to the Nexon leader, this vital contextual capital must be synergistically complemented by “compound interest” within the game itself.
“Developers leverage insights from previous game titles to continuously enhance the completeness and quality of their subsequent projects. Simultaneously, players extend their gaming experiences beyond the platform by engaging with content creators, discussing the game with peers, and generating their own unique gaming content,” Kang elaborated.
“Artificial intelligence can be acquired, but genuine accumulated intelligence is exclusively built through the dedicated time invested in cultivating context. The initial scale of a starting point holds less significance. Compound interest can accelerate growth rapidly, even from modest beginnings. What truly matters is the commitment to start building your unique context today.”
The 2026 Nexon Developers Conference, a premier event for game industry professionals, spans three days through Thursday, featuring 51 insightful sessions. These sessions delve into nine key categories, including the transformative impact of AI in gaming, innovative game design and operational strategies, and advanced data analysis techniques. All sessions are conveniently streamed live via the official NDC YouTube channel.
Now in its 19th edition, the NDC has solidified its reputation as Korea’s largest and most influential gathering for game developers. Last year’s event impressively attracted 7,600 on-site participants and garnered an additional 58,500 views across its live streaming platforms.
