K-pop Powerhouses Unite: Joint Venture Aims for Global Music Festival Rivaling Coachella by 2027
Four of South Korea’s leading K-pop entertainment companies – Hybe, JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment – are joining forces to establish a joint venture. Their ambitious goal is to launch a large-scale **K-pop music festival** designed to rival global events like Coachella, with an anticipated debut in 2027.
Recent reports indicate that these major **K-pop agencies** have submitted a business combination report to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC). This move is a crucial step towards creating a joint entity specifically focused on comprehensive concert planning and the development of this groundbreaking **global music event**.
The FTC filing was a necessary regulatory step, particularly as Hybe is categorized as a large conglomerate with assets exceeding 5 trillion won, and SM Entertainment holds affiliation with the prominent Kakao Group.
Adding to the initiative, the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange has confirmed ongoing discussions regarding a public-private partnership. This collaboration aims to further expand the international reach and global impact of “K-culture,” a broad term encompassing the Hallyu wave.
JYP Entertainment, one of the key players, issued a statement affirming the private sector’s commitment: “Within the committee’s music division, the four participating companies are actively preparing to establish a corporation dedicated to promoting the ‘Fanomenon’ event. This **joint venture** is envisioned as a collaborative model to strategically explore the global expansion of **K-culture**, including the burgeoning **K-pop** genre.”
However, the project is still in its nascent stages. The companies are currently reviewing the cooperative structure at an industry level, focusing on collective efforts rather than individual initiatives. All necessary procedures, including the critical regulatory approval from the FTC, are actively underway.
This pioneering joint venture is anticipated to be established with equal investment contributions from each of the four prominent **K-pop labels**. While the funding model is clear, specific details concerning leadership roles and overall governance structures are yet to be finalized.
The primary focus of the new entity will be concert planning, culminating in the launch of a major **music festival**, tentatively named “Fanomenon.” This flagship event is slated to debut in South Korea in 2027 and will proudly feature a diverse lineup of artists from all four participating agencies.
The exciting concept of “Fanomenon” was initially unveiled during the launch ceremony of the presidential committee in October. J.Y. Park, the founder of JYP Entertainment and a co-chair of the committee, first outlined plans for this mega event, explaining that its name ingeniously combines the words “fan” and “phenomenon” to reflect its immersive fan experience.
According to Park, the inaugural **Fanomenon festival** is set to premiere in Korea in December 2027, following approximately two years of intensive preparation. Beyond its initial launch, there are ambitious plans for the event to evolve into a global touring spectacular, expanding its reach across major international cities starting in May 2028.
