South Korean musician Psy’s global megahit “Gangnam Style” has surpassed 6 billion views on YouTube, becoming the first K-pop music video to reach this monumental milestone, the singer’s agency announced on Monday.
The iconic video officially crossed the 6 billion mark on Friday, nearly 14 years to the day after its initial release on July 15, 2012.
It took approximately two years and seven months for the video to accumulate its most recent billion views, having previously exceeded the 5-billion-view mark on Dec. 30, 2023.
Propelled by its unforgettable catchy lyrics, distinctive horse-riding choreography, and famously playful music video, “Gangnam Style” quickly transformed into a worldwide phenomenon shortly after its debut.
In December 2012, “Gangnam Style” made history as the first YouTube video ever to reach 1 billion views. The track also impressively held the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks, significantly paving the way for K-pop’s broader expansion into the Western music market.
P Nation, Psy’s management agency, hailed this achievement as a “landmark accomplishment in K-pop history,” emphasizing the song’s enduring popularity with diverse audiences across the globe.
Psy himself commemorated the momentous occasion at his “Summerswag 2026” concert held in Gwacheon on Sunday, gracing the stage in the distinctive blue tuxedo he famously wore in the music video.
“I’ll post footage from today’s performance on YouTube to sincerely thank fans for helping the video achieve this incredible feat of 6 billion views,” he shared with the enthusiastic crowd.
