K-pop group ZEROBASEONE (ZB1) has shared insights into their decision to continue as a five-member team, expressing both the pressure and heightened sense of responsibility accompanying this new chapter in their career.

ZB1 members Sung Hanbin, Kim Jiwoong, Seok Matthew, Kim Taerae, and Park Gunwook recently sat down for an interview at a café in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to commemorate the release of their sixth mini-album, ‘Ascend-‘.

During the interview, Seok Matthew explained his strong desire to remain with ZB1. “I genuinely enjoy being with the members. I never considered going solo; I always wanted to stay together for as long as possible,” he emphasized. “My wish was to consistently continue our activities as ZEROBASEONE.”

Sung Hanbin echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Even during our recent discussions, we felt it was destined that such like-minded members would meet. Although the final decision-making process was challenging, our fans were always at the forefront of our minds. We thought, ‘Wouldn’t our fans be delighted to see us together?’ and that ultimately guided our decision.”

He further elaborated, “Our biggest challenge was determining what kind of first impression to make. We extensively debated whether to maintain our established style or present a fresh, new image. We also carefully considered how to best meet the expectations of both the general public and our dedicated fans. However, upon hearing the demo track, all members were unanimously enthusiastic.” Sung Hanbin added, “Through our performance at ‘KCON JAPAN’ recently, we feel we’ve received some confirmation regarding our direction. As a result, we are now fully focused on this upcoming comeback.”

Undoubtedly, there was pressure to command the stage as a five-member unit after some members’ departure. Park Gunwook addressed this, stating, “I believe that now that we are five, it’s a moment for us to prove ourselves. This is just my personal view, but I tend to enjoy this kind of pressure. It could serve as a turning point or a stimulating factor in our lives and careers.” He emphasized, “Rather than viewing it as a burden, we intend to use it as motivation to propel ourselves forward. We are focusing on creating exceptional results, regardless of charting performance.”

He further elaborated, “We had many discussions about how to uphold ZB1’s existing legacy while simultaneously showcasing a new image. Since the dynamics of nine members and five members are distinct, it feels like we are creating a new identity, both musically and visually.”

Kim Jiwoong commented, “When we were active as nine members, our primary concern was often the team’s collective identity. Now, there’s a strong desire to nurture both the team’s identity and each individual member’s unique identity. To achieve this, each member is also putting in significantly more individual effort.”

The group also cautiously addressed questions regarding their future activity period. Sung Hanbin revealed, “Although our initial contract period was defined, we are currently operating with various possibilities open for the future. Consequently, our sense of responsibility towards the team has grown even stronger.”

He clarified, “We haven’t become complacent. Instead, we are constantly deliberating on how to effectively manage and channel this pressure.” Sung Hanbin continued, “Both as a cohesive team and as individual artists, our desire and passion to challenge ourselves remain immense. However, I truly believe I was able to debut and find my place in the world because of this team. I have a profound wish to maintain the ‘home’ that is ZB1 for as long as possible. We aspire to build upon our foundations and grow even stronger in the future.” He then conveyed a message to fans, “While nothing specific has been formally discussed yet, I want to reassure our fans that they can feel at ease. We are eager to show you as many diverse facets of ourselves as possible.”

Park Gunwook also expressed his deep affection for the group, saying, “The members frequently talk about wanting to promote for a long time and create music together for a long time. As long as our personal relationships remain strong and unwavering, I believe we can continue together for many years to come.”
