Boy group CORTIS is off to a great start.
CORTIS (Martin, James, Juhun, Sunghyun, Gunho) is the new boy group launched by Big Hit Music, the company behind the success of BTS and TXT, after 6 years. -It’s only been 6 months since your debut, and you’ve already attended many award ceremonies and gained a lot of stage experience.
▶James=I feel honored just to be invited to award ceremonies. We’ve been getting a lot of opportunities at the end of last year, so we’re having fulfilling days. I think we were happy and enjoyed preparing for this AAA stage as well. I feel good about being busy.
▶Juhun=Since one of the most important things in this profession is the stage, it was fun to be able to perform on such big stages. We were lucky enough to receive the Rookie Award, so I’m very grateful to the company staff and the fans.
-AAA was your first time attending, and you achieved two awards. How did you feel when you recall that moment?
▶Martin=I’m very grateful that we were honored to receive two awards at the 10th Anniversary of AAA. The Rookie Award is an award that can only be received once during your career, and the Best Performance Award is special to us because we are a group that values performance.
▶Sunghyun=It was so good. I was surprised too. It felt like we were being recognized because we performed with songs we made and even received the Rookie Award. I thought we should do better in our next activities.
-Actually, the cheers for CORTIS were unusually loud. Especially for James, who is from Taipei, which is close to Kaohsiung, it must have felt even more special.
▶James=I felt good because I received a lot of cheers in this city. I remember having fun because it was the first big stage at an award ceremony in a long time. Also, it was a very new experience for our team to take pictures and talk with many senior artists.
-You must have received a lot of congratulations from acquaintances after winning the award.
▶Gunho=The first call came from my parents. They sent a message saying, ‘Son, you won the Rookie Award. Congratulations.’ I received more calls from family and relatives than from friends.
▶Juhun=There was a security guard at the venue who said, ‘Congratulations,’ which made me very happy.
-It was CORTIS’s first time performing in a 360-degree stage, so your mindset must have been special when performing.
▶Gunho=It was a 360-degree performance, and it was also the first time I rode a lift on stage. It was so amazing to see the scenery unfolding in 360 degrees. The stage was prepared so grandly, so it was fun to go up and perform. The lights seen from the artist seats at night were also touching.
-At the award ceremony, many senior artists and even actors shouted out CORTIS. What do you think is the charm of your team that makes even people in the entertainment industry fall for CORTIS?
▶Sunghyun=I think the biggest charm is our stage performance and our naturalness. I think people like us because we are unadorned and express ourselves as we are.
▶Martin=When we prepare for the stage, we try to fill the stage with only the five of us without using dancers as much as possible. We prepare for the stage thinking about how we can fill the stage with just five people and how we can get a response not only from fans but also from all audiences. I think people see these efforts favorably.
▶Juhun=Above all, I think the song is the most important thing. When we made the first album, we made the songs with all our attention, and I was grateful that everyone liked them so much. So, we are still preparing for the next album, and we will try our best.
-If you attend AAA 2026, what award would you like to receive then?
▶Gunho=We are a team that directly created and showed the music video composition and planning in our first album, so it would be a great honor to receive the Best Music Video Award. It would be more meaningful because we are directly directing and planning it.
▶Sunghyun=It seems like a long time from now, but since we are a creative team, if we produce all the songs, I would like to receive an award like Producer of the Year like Stray Kids sunbaenims.
