The South Korean government has announced the appointment of external ambassadors, granting individuals with significant expertise and public recognition a one-year term to contribute to the nation’s diplomatic activities.
Renowned Grammy-winning soprano Sumi Jo has been named an ambassador, with expectations that she will significantly contribute to the ‘K-Initiative’ and the global expansion of K-culture. The ministry highlighted her role in enhancing understanding of Korea’s public and cultural diplomacy policies through outreach to both public and private sector stakeholders.
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of her international debut this year, Jo is recognized worldwide as a leading voice in classical music. Her extensive experience includes previous roles as a public relations ambassador for the Korea-Japan World Cup, a cultural public diplomacy envoy for the ministry, and a promotional ambassador for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Additionally, the ministry appointed Lee Seong-hoon, a distinguished professor from Sungkonghoe University, as the ambassador for human rights, peace, and democracy.
Professor Lee is tasked with strengthening Korea’s participation in vital international discussions on human rights, peace, and democracy. This involves attending major international conferences, including the UN Human Rights Council, and fostering robust cooperation networks with like-minded nations and international civil society, as stated by the ministry.
