Go Young-wook, a former member of the popular coed K-pop group Roo’Ra, has controversially announced his consideration of becoming a male adult video (AV) actor in Japan. This comes amidst his reported struggles to find employment opportunities in South Korea.
The 50-year-old artist shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday that despite his past hopes of living a joyful life and entertaining people, securing work in South Korea now seems increasingly difficult.
“I recall reading that Japan is currently experiencing a shortage of male adult video performers,” Go Young-wook wrote. He further indicated his willingness to pursue such work “if it is legally permissible and allowed by law” in Japan.
Go Young-wook originally debuted with the K-pop sensation Roo’Ra in 1994.
However, his career was marred by significant legal issues. In 2013, Go Young-wook was convicted and sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting and molesting three minors between July 2010 and 2012. The court additionally mandated that he wear an electronic monitoring device for three years and made his personal information public for a period of five years.
Following his release from prison in 2015, Go Young-wook issued an apology, acknowledging the public concern his actions had caused and stating that he had reflected deeply during his incarceration.
Despite attempts to re-engage with the public, his efforts have met with setbacks. An Instagram account he launched in November 2020, intended for communication, was swiftly shut down due to numerous user reports. Similarly, a YouTube channel he initiated in 2024 was also subsequently removed.
