Samsung SDI announced a significant achievement on Tuesday: its advanced battery system for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) has successfully passed a rigorous fire safety test by UL Solutions, the renowned global safety certification organization. This milestone is poised to dramatically enhance Samsung SDI’s competitive edge in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) data center market.
UPS systems are critical infrastructure, delivering immediate backup power during electricity interruptions or voltage fluctuations. For AI data centers and other facilities demanding continuous, stable power, reliable UPS solutions are absolutely essential.
The South Korean battery innovator confirmed that its UPS battery system excelled across all evaluation criteria in UL Solutions’ demanding Indoor Large-Scale Fire Test (Indoor LSFT). This comprehensive test specifically evaluates a system’s ability to prevent fire propagation to adjacent battery racks or other components, even after a battery module within a UPS rack is intentionally ignited and forced into thermal runaway.
Remarkably, during the test, while the battery module underwent combustion, flames were completely contained and did not spread to nearby racks. Samsung SDI further reported zero gas release, explosions, or ruptures throughout the stringent evaluation, underscoring the system’s inherent safety.
Crucially, the fire self-extinguished without the need for overhead sprinklers, definitively demonstrating the system’s superior capability to prevent thermal propagation and ensure contained safety.
Samsung SDI proudly announced its distinction as the first battery manufacturer worldwide to officially pass this rigorous UL Solutions test since its introduction earlier this year, setting a new benchmark for fire safety in UPS battery systems.
This groundbreaking test result is a testament to Samsung SDI’s proprietary thermal propagation prevention design and advanced prismatic battery technologies. These innovative batteries incorporate lithium manganese oxide materials and robust aluminum casings, specifically engineered to enhance structural stability and effectively contain any potential thermal events.
This vital UL Solutions certification is expected to significantly solidify Samsung SDI’s leadership in the global UPS battery market. With major technology firms and AI data center operators increasingly prioritizing proven fire safety credentials, this achievement positions Samsung SDI as a preferred and trusted supplier.
“Samsung SDI has not only successfully met but exceeded the stringent Indoor LSFT requirements, unequivocally validating our differentiated fire safety technologies,” stated a Samsung SDI official. “We are committed to continuously delivering the most trusted and advanced energy solutions across a diverse spectrum of applications, including the rapidly evolving AI data center Energy Storage System (ESS) market.”
