Leading scholars worldwide are set to convene in South Korea this July for a significant international academic conference, delving deep into BTS’ profound global cultural influence and exploring the group’s anticipated post-military service era. This event promises unparalleled academic insights into the K-pop phenomenon.
The International Society for BTS Studies officially announced that “BTS: A Global Interdisciplinary Conference” will take place on July 2-3 at the prestigious Jeonbuk National University International Convention Center in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province. This landmark event will be held under the compelling theme, “The Next-Generation Hallyu and BTS,” marking a pivotal moment for K-pop scholarship.
As an annual highlight for K-pop academic discourse, this conference, initially launched at Kingston University in London in 2020, has successfully completed four hybrid editions. The 2026 iteration is set to host an impressive assembly of 50 scholars from 10 diverse countries, including South Korea, the US, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia, the Czech Republic, Canada, Australia, and Japan, showcasing truly global participation in BTS studies.
Keynote speakers for the conference include Professor Lee Jee-heng from Jeonbuk National University’s esteemed Department of K-Entertainment. Professor Lee will deliver an insightful address examining the critical social and cultural significance of BTS’ much-anticipated return after their military service, engaging in discussions that will cover BTS fandom dynamics, the impact of digital technology, strategies in global communication, and their broad political and social engagement.
Another distinguished speaker is Emeritus Sociology Professor Han Sang-jin from Seoul National University. His session, titled “Three Modes of Theoretical Approach to BTS in Global Transformation: The 2026 Comeback Performances,” promises to offer profound theoretical insights into BTS’s impact on global cultural shifts and their eagerly awaited comeback performances.
Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to engage with an exclusive interview featuring Bao Nguyen, the acclaimed director behind the compelling Netflix documentary, “BTS: The Return.”
In a pre-conference interview with the organizers, Nguyen shared his deliberate approach to his documentary, emphasizing his commitment to avoiding the simplification of BTS or broader Korean culture specifically for Western audiences.
“My goal was to craft the documentary through careful observation, enabling audiences to experience a narrative that feels authentically intimate and brings them closer to the group,” Nguyen explained, highlighting his unique storytelling perspective on the K-pop global superstars.
Nguyen further stressed the importance of portraying BTS not as a singular entity, but as “seven individual human beings.” He cited captivating scenes from the members’ everyday lives, such as Jin playing tennis and RM exploring art museums, alongside candid discussions about the creation of their song “Body to Body.” These moments, Nguyen revealed, were specifically chosen to underscore both the distinct individual identities of the members and the powerful, enduring bond that unites the group.
Beyond academic presentations, the conference will also host a diverse range of public programs, spotlighting the dynamic intersection of K-pop, culture, and crucial civic engagement. A particularly noteworthy session, organized by Kpop4Planet – a pioneering global fan-led climate action platform – will delve into successful campaigns where K-pop fans effectively advocated for major companies to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices, showcasing the power of fan activism.
The conference will culminate in a truly special cultural performance: traditional Korean musicians from Jeonju will present a unique reinterpretation of “Arirang.” This iconic melody, which shares its title with BTS’ fifth studio album and features as a refrain in “Body to Body,” will be brought to life through various captivating styles of Korean traditional music, offering a harmonious blend of heritage and contemporary influence.
