Following the significant surge in SK Hynix shares after its announcement of plans for an American Depositary Receipt (ADR) listing, industry analysts suggest that tech giant Samsung Electronics could experience a similar positive rerating if it pursues such a strategic move, as highlighted by KB Securities on Thursday.

The shares of SK Hynix have notably rallied, driven by strong market optimism surrounding its forthcoming Nasdaq ADR listing. This impressive performance briefly propelled SK Hynix past Samsung Electronics earlier this week, making it the most valuable listed company by market capitalization in South Korea.

A similar US ADR listing could significantly benefit Samsung Electronics, offering broader access and enhanced appeal for global investors, a key point emphasized in a report by Kim Dong-won, research head at KB Securities.

Kim Dong-won stated in the report, “A US ADR listing stands out as one of the most viable capital policy options for broadening Samsung’s access to a wider pool of global investors. We anticipate that discussions around this strategic initiative will gain considerable momentum moving forward.”

He further highlighted, “Recent engagements with overseas investors have revealed significantly stronger-than-expected interest in a potential US ADR listing for Samsung Electronics. Numerous investors perceive such a move as a powerful catalyst capable of boosting the company’s shares and overall market valuation.”

Based on these considerations, KB Securities has increased its target price for Samsung Electronics from 530,000 won to 550,000 won ($355). This revised outlook primarily factors in the potential US ADR listing, alongside expectations for enhanced shareholder returns and improving profitability from its foundry operations.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix confirmed on Wednesday that its board had officially approved the issuance of ADRs, which will be backed by newly issued common shares. The plan details the issuance of up to 17.79 million new common shares, representing approximately 2.5 percent of its total outstanding shares. These ADRs are slated to commence trading on the Nasdaq exchange on July 10. Following this definitive announcement, SK Hynix shares experienced a surge of over 10 percent in Thursday’s trading session.

Historically, Samsung Electronics has been the established market bellwether, consistently holding its position as the most valuable company on the benchmark Kospi index since 2000. However, SK Hynix briefly eclipsed its rival in market capitalization for the first time on Monday. Although Samsung Electronics swiftly reclaimed the top spot on Wednesday, the competitive gap between these two semiconductor giants remains notably narrow.

This recent shift underscores SK Hynix’s exceptionally strong stock performance. Its shares have seen an impressive surge of approximately 340 percent year-to-date, significantly outpacing the roughly 200 percent gain recorded by Samsung Electronics during the identical period.

The report concludes by stating, “Considering Samsung Electronics’ current market undervaluation and the prevailing favorable market conditions, a US ADR listing scenario for the company cannot be readily dismissed, suggesting a high probability of its consideration.”
