LG Chem has announced a significant strategic partnership with Shanghai-based OTR Therapeutics. This collaboration aims to identify and advance promising oncology drug candidates, marking a strong push into China’s rapidly expanding biotechnology sector and bolstering LG Chem’s global footprint in innovative cancer treatment development.
OTR Therapeutics is a cutting-edge biotechnology company renowned for its integrated approach, combining in-house research with open innovation. Their focus spans the discovery and development of novel treatments for cancer, along with immunological, inflammatory, and metabolic disorders.
Under the terms of this pivotal agreement, LG Chem will strategically leverage OTR’s profound drug discovery expertise and extensive industry network. This will enable them to effectively identify, rigorously evaluate, and in-license high-potential oncology candidates from leading Chinese biopharmaceutical companies.
To accelerate the journey to market, both companies will strategically divide development responsibilities. OTR Therapeutics is set to lead preclinical and early-stage clinical development efforts within China, while LG Chem will take charge of overseeing late-stage global clinical trials and spearheading subsequent commercialization initiatives worldwide.
LG Chem highlighted China’s growing prominence as a global hub for innovative drug development. This growth is significantly fueled by supportive government policies that actively encourage pharmaceutical innovation and streamlined clinical trial regulations, which have remarkably improved development speed and cost efficiency within the sector.
Further emphasizing China’s burgeoning influence, a recent JPMorgan report revealed that Chinese-developed drug candidates accounted for approximately 30 percent of the global innovative drug pipeline last year.
“This collaboration with OTR decisively strengthens our capability to systematically identify and rigorously validate promising drug candidates in China, a nation that has firmly established itself as a major center for innovative drug development,” stated Son Jee-woong, head of LG Chem’s Life Sciences Business Division.
“By proactively securing these valuable assets at an early stage, we are poised to generate future development opportunities, significantly bolster our global competitiveness, and ultimately enhance patients’ access to groundbreaking, innovative treatments,” he added.
“By synergistically combining OTR’s agile R&D and robust business development capabilities with LG Chem’s deep expertise in clinical development and global commercialization, our collective aim is to transform early-stage innovations into high-value oncology therapies that truly make a difference for patients,” remarked Zhui Chen, founder and CEO of OTR Therapeutics.
