Doosan Enerbility announced on Thursday its selection as a strategic partner for a groundbreaking small modular reactor (SMR) project spearheaded by Rolls-Royce SMR. This pivotal collaboration marks a significant step forward in the global SMR industry.
This strategic partnership will see Doosan Enerbility conducting crucial feasibility tests for essential equipment, including advanced nuclear reactors. These components are integral to Rolls-Royce SMR projects planned for deployment in key European markets, specifically the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.
Rolls-Royce SMR stands as a prominent small modular reactor development firm, with the renowned British aerospace and defense company, Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC, serving as its primary shareholder. The company is actively developing a cutting-edge 470-megawatt SMR design, engineered to provide a stable, reliable base load of electricity for an impressive operational lifespan of 60 years.
This comprehensive partnership specifically encompasses two significant SMR initiatives: the Wylfa SMR project located in the United Kingdom and the Temelin SMR project situated in the Czech Republic.
Significant progress has already been made by Rolls-Royce SMR, including the signing of a crucial contract with the British state-run nuclear institution, GBE-N, last April. This agreement initiated site-specific design work for three SMR reactors at Wylfa. Furthermore, Rolls-Royce SMR secured a construction preparation contract with CEZ, the Czech state-run energy company, and is actively advancing through the licensing and pre-planning phases for the Temelin project.
Commenting on this strategic alliance, Kim Jong-doo, CEO of Doosan Enerbility Nuclear BG, stated, “Our robust partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR presents an unparalleled opportunity for Doosan Enerbility to substantially expand its pivotal role within the rapidly growing global SMR supply chain.”
He added, “Leveraging our extensive expertise in nuclear plant manufacturing and advanced technical capabilities, Doosan Enerbility is committed to taking an active and impactful role in all of Rolls-Royce’s SMR projects.”
To further bolster its commitment to the SMR market, Doosan Enerbility is actively enhancing its production and manufacturing capacities. This includes recent efforts to establish an SMR-specialized plant at its Changwon headquarters. Furthermore, the company is integrating cutting-edge power metallurgy and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technologies, significantly advancing its capabilities for manufacturing high-quality SMR equipment.
