Labor Minister, Samsung Execs Tackle Strike Deadline

Labor Minister, Samsung Execs Tackle Strike Deadline
Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon ()

Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon is slated to meet with Samsung Electronics executives as early as Saturday, intensifying government efforts to avert a looming 18-day strike by the company’s largest union. This critical intervention aims to prevent significant disruptions to the tech giant’s operations, focusing on the ongoing Samsung wage talks.

Industry sources reported Friday that Minister Kim’s anticipated meeting with Samsung management seeks a crucial, last-minute breakthrough in the deeply stalled wage negotiations.

This pivotal meeting with Samsung executives follows Minister Kim’s earlier discussion today with Choi Seung-ho, who leads Samsung Electronics’ largest labor union.

Minister Kim is expected to relay the union’s key demands to management and strongly urge both parties to resume constructive negotiations, hoping to avert the scheduled industrial walkout.

The union has specifically requested Minister Kim’s assistance in reopening negotiations, stipulating conditions that include replacing Samsung’s chief negotiator, Vice President Kim Hyung-ro. They also demand a “substantive change” in the company’s negotiating stance regarding the Samsung Electronics strike.

Union officials have expressed strong objections to alleged remarks made by Vice President Kim during previous negotiations, notably a comment estimating Samsung Electronics’ operating profit this year at 200 trillion won ($134 billion). The union contends this statement reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of the complex semiconductor business.

At the core of this ongoing labor dispute is the contentious issue of performance-based pay.

The union is demanding Samsung allocate a fixed 15 percent of its operating profit specifically for bonuses, alongside the removal of current payout caps.

Conversely, Samsung management has rejected this fixed formula, preferring to maintain the existing bonus structure while retaining the flexibility to offer uncapped special rewards for exceptional performance when warranted.

With both sides firmly entrenched in their positions, crucial labor negotiations have unfortunately remained deadlocked.

The union has declared its intention to proceed with an industrial strike from May 21 through June 7, anticipating the participation of up to 50,000 members in this significant Samsung union strike.

Such a significant walkout is being closely monitored across the global chip industry, where even minor disruptions can severely impact critical production schedules and global customer commitments, potentially affecting the entire semiconductor supply chain.

Industry observers have issued stark warnings, estimating potential direct and indirect losses could escalate to 100 trillion won if the planned strike significantly disrupts Samsung’s vital semiconductor operations.
