K-pop duo Flare U officially made its debut on Wednesday with their first EP, “Youth Error.” The two-member act introduced themselves with a unique concept: that imperfections can forge their own distinct kind of brightness, setting them apart in the competitive K-pop landscape.
The rising K-pop duo, composed of members Chuei Liyu and Kang Woojin, held a successful debut showcase ahead of the EP’s highly anticipated release. They presented “Youth Error” as the poignant starting point of a youth story, deeply shaped by experiences of trial and error, as well as the unwavering power of companionship and personal growth.
The name “Flare U” itself holds significant meaning, referring to the powerful moment when two separate lights converge to form a single, brighter glow. The “U” further represents their cherished fans, underscoring that Flare U’s synergy and artistic journey become complete only when shared with their dedicated audience.
Before their official K-pop debut, both Liyu and Woojin had already garnered considerable attention through their participation in the popular survival program “Boys II Planet.” During their time on the show, they were widely recognized for their impressive performance skills and strong vocals. Although neither secured a spot in the final lineup for Alpha Drive One, the duo candidly shared with the press on Wednesday that the entire “Boys II Planet” experience ultimately served as a crucial stepping-stone toward their current debut as Flare U.
“‘Boys II Planet’ was my very first survival program experience, making it physically and mentally challenging in numerous ways,” Woojin reflected. “However, having gone through it once, I truly believe it significantly helped me grow and prepare for everything that has come since.”
Liyu also spoke positively about his experience on the program, emphasizing how it profoundly helped shape him as a performer.
“I learned an immense amount – from honing my technical skills to deeply understanding how to authentically express myself on stage,” he shared. “Looking back now, it truly feels like a beautiful and unforgettable memory.”
Both members articulated that their combined experiences, ranging from the intense pressures of a competition program to gradually connecting with fans prior to their debut as a duo, profoundly shaped the core message and narrative embedded within their first EP, “Youth Error.”

The EP “Youth Error” masterfully conveys the compelling story of two imperfect young individuals who stumble, make mistakes, and eventually find themselves moving in the same direction. Woojin eloquently described the album as “a heartfelt record of two different youths coming together as one cohesive team and collectively becoming one radiant light.”
The album’s vibrant lead track, “Way 2 U,” is an innovative hybrid pop song. It seamlessly blends bouncy pluck riffs, bright and energetic rhythms, glitchy hyperpop textures, and smooth Plugg & B grooves. The song perfectly captures the exhilarating rush of realizing romantic feelings that transcend mere friendship, and the fearless urge to run toward that person without any hesitation.
“When I first heard the song, I immediately thought it was refreshing, cute, and something our fans would absolutely adore,” Liyu commented. “Upon closer look at the lyrics, it also felt like they could be directly addressed to our fans, which made me love it even more.”
As one of the relatively few rookie K-pop duos making their debut in recent years, Flare U’s members highlighted their smaller lineup as a distinct and defining strength within the dynamic K-pop industry.
“Since there are only two of us, each member naturally gets more opportunities to showcase their own unique vibe and individuality,” Liyu explained. “Furthermore, there aren’t many duo groups active these days, so I believe that in itself has become a significant part of what makes us truly unique. We possess distinct personalities and charms, but when we unite, we beautifully complement and complete each other.”

However, instead of placing excessive focus on their rare identity as a duo, Flare U aims to authentically portray their imperfections and flaws exactly as they are, rather than striving to appear flawless or manufactured.
“The overarching message behind Flare U is centered on two imperfect youths coming together and ultimately creating one radiant light with the support of their fans,” Woojin elaborated. “Nobody is truly perfect, but I believe that’s precisely what makes people more beautiful and relatable. Even if we’re not flawless, I sincerely hope we will always be able to demonstrate how dedicated and genuine we are about our work to our fans.”
The K-pop duo also shared their heartfelt aspirations, revealing the kind of artists they hope to become through their impactful music.
“I want us to evolve into a group that is like a vitamin vending machine,” Liyu humorously yet thoughtfully remarked. “Just as vitamins have become an essential element people naturally seek out in their daily lives, I hope Flare U can become a group that people instinctively turn to whenever they need a burst of energy or a moment of comfort.”
Both members proudly named veteran K-pop duo AKMU among their primary role models, expressing their desire to create music that listeners find similarly comforting and inspiring.
“I have always deeply admired how AKMU truly enjoys every moment on stage and authentically tells their own unique stories through their music,” Woojin stated. “Their songs provide immense comfort to so many people, and I sincerely hope Flare U can become artists who offer that same sense of solace and connection.”
