Daewoong Pharmaceutical Forges Strategic Alliance with TionLab Therapeutics for Global Monthly Semaglutide Injectable Development
Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced a significant strategic partnership agreement with TionLab Therapeutics on Friday. This collaboration aims to jointly develop and commercialize a novel, long-acting monthly semaglutide injectable, targeting the burgeoning global obesity treatment market.
This innovative agreement exemplifies an open innovation model, effectively combining the agile capabilities of a pioneering bio startup with the extensive resources and leadership of a prominent pharmaceutical company.
Leveraging TionLab’s advanced long-acting drug transmission platform technologies alongside Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s proven expertise in drug development and commercialization, both entities are poised to establish a formidable competitive advantage in the international market for obesity management solutions.
Central to this groundbreaking project is the synergistic integration of TionLab Therapeutics’ proprietary Quject Sphere technology with Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s advanced CURE platform. This powerful combination will be utilized to create a highly effective monthly semaglutide injectable.
The Quject Sphere technology is designed to precisely regulate the initial release rate of the drug, while Daewoong’s CURE technologies ensure a consistent and sustained release profile thereafter. This unique synergy guarantees reliable, long-acting drug delivery patterns, preventing undesirable sudden bursts and ensuring consistent product quality, which is crucial for patient safety and efficacy.
A major benefit of this novel treatment is significantly enhanced patient convenience. By reducing the frequency of injections from 52 times annually to just 12, the monthly regimen is expected to greatly improve patient adherence and facilitate long-term use in managing obesity.
Both companies have already taken proactive steps, having applied for an Investigational New Drug (IND) for the project last April. They intend to commence clinical trials and accelerate development, with an ambitious plan to make prescriptions available within the current year.
Through this strategic agreement, Daewoong Pharmaceutical is significantly expanding its robust obesity portfolio. The addition of this long-acting injectable complements its existing range of anti-obesity solutions, which include tablets and innovative microneedle patches, creating a comprehensive offering for patients and healthcare providers.
Park Seong-soo, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, affirmed the company’s strengthened market position, stating, “Through this pivotal agreement, we have successfully completed an unrivaled portfolio within the dynamic obesity treatment sector.”
Lim Duck-soo, CEO of TionLab Therapeutics, expressed optimism about the future impact of their collaborative effort: “With an innovative, once-a-month injectable offering equivalent or even superior efficiency compared to existing treatments, we are set to introduce a new paradigm for obesity treatment.”
