Investigation into Hybe chairman puts the whole industry on edge, observers say
The potential indictment of Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk for violating capital markets law could have far-reaching consequences, delivering a significant blow across the entire K-pop industry, according to well-placed industry insiders.
Bang is alleged to have deceived Hybe’s existing investors in 2019, a year before the company’s initial public offering (IPO). He reportedly made false assurances that no IPO plans were underway, while simultaneously orchestrating a scheme for company executives to divest their shares via a special-purpose entity created by a private equity fund. These actions reportedly led to illicit gains totaling approximately 190 billion won ($129.06 million). Both police and prosecutors are currently conducting separate, ongoing investigations into these serious allegations.
Although a decision on Bang’s indictment is anticipated by the second half of the year, industry observers widely agree that the fallout from such a potential indictment would profoundly impact the K-pop sector far beyond Hybe itself.
“This situation will not be contained as a mere ‘owner risk’ issue,” an executive from a prominent K-pop agency stated Monday, opting for anonymity. “Irrespective of how autonomously Hybe’s subsidiary labels function, Hybe’s global standing transcends any single label; it essentially represents the entire K-pop phenomenon on the world stage.
“Should the chairman face indictment on charges linked to the very core principles that built the company, it would undeniably erode the trust and legitimacy of the entire K-pop enterprise,” the executive emphasized.
Bang Si-hyuk stands as one of the most influential figures within the global K-pop industry. As the chairman of the world’s leading K-pop entertainment company, he is widely recognized for discovering and nurturing BTS, and is considered a primary architect behind the global K-pop boom. Furthermore, he has pioneered the export of K-pop’s unique artist training and development system internationally.

Hybe’s international expansion has accelerated dramatically in recent years. For instance, in 2024, the company established a significant joint venture with Geffen Records, a Universal Music Group subsidiary, leading to the successful launch of the highly anticipated girl group Katseye. Further demonstrating its global reach, Hybe Latin America debuted the five-member boy group Santos Bravos in Mexico in October 2025.
“The repercussions would be felt across the entire K-pop industry,” the executive continued. “Should the leader of K-pop’s largest corporation be indicted for capital markets violations, it risks creating a perception that the company views its artists merely as instruments for profit. Such an outcome would undoubtedly compel governmental bodies to implement far stricter scrutiny on all future entertainment company stock listings, irrespective of their scale.”
Music critic Lim Hee-yun further projected that an indictment would severely depress Hybe’s stock price and negatively affect investor sentiment. This scenario, he noted, would attract considerable international media attention and inflict significant reputational damage both domestically and globally.
Lim also highlighted that Bang’s role as executive producer for BTS’s fifth studio album, “Arirang,” released in March, could potentially impose future limitations on the globally renowned group’s activities.
“Should the public image of Hybe’s artists and groups diminish, the consequences will be palpable,” Lim asserted. “While their world tour initially achieved robust numbers, an examination of their album sales and promotional strategies targeting the US and English-speaking markets suggests momentum is waning more rapidly than anticipated. The current tour, it appears, is largely sustained by the unwavering loyalty of their existing fandom. Collectively, these indicators do not present a particularly optimistic outlook for BTS.”
“Hybe’s ambition for BTS’s global influence to continue its expansion is currently not aligning with reality,” he concluded. “If Bang’s ongoing legal challenges further tarnish Hybe’s reputation, while the core fanbase might remain steadfast, it could significantly hinder their ability to attract the casual fans essential for continued growth. This would undeniably impact BTS’s future activities and trajectory.”
