Posco Future M Wins Vietnam Anode Plant Approval

Posco Future M Secures Approval for First Overseas Anode Base in Vietnam, Targeting 2028 Production

Posco Future M has successfully secured critical regulatory approval for its landmark synthetic graphite anode project in Vietnam. This significant milestone paves the way for the company’s full-scale overseas expansion, strategically strengthening its global battery materials supply chain to meet surging demand for advanced EV battery components.

During the recent Korea-Vietnam Business Forum in Hanoi, the company officially received an investment registration certificate from Thai Nguyen Province. This formally completes the essential approval procedures required for this significant foreign investment, underscoring a commitment to international collaboration.

With this crucial approval, Posco Future M is set to commence construction of its first-phase plant at the Song Cong 2 Industrial Complex later this year. Mass production of synthetic graphite anodes is firmly targeted for 2028. The initial phase involves an investment of approximately 357 billion won ($240 million), and the company has already secured key customers for the projected output, with future capacity expansion planned to align with new order acquisitions.

This groundbreaking project represents Posco Future M’s first overseas production base for anode materials, marking a pivotal step towards diversifying its global manufacturing footprint and significantly enhancing cost competitiveness within the battery materials market.

Synthetic graphite anodes are critical components known for improving fast-charging capability and extending battery lifespan in electric vehicles. While global demand for these advanced materials continues to grow steadily, their supply remains heavily concentrated in a limited number of countries. This concentration makes supply chain diversification increasingly vital, especially amidst rising global trade barriers and protectionist policies.

To mitigate these risks, Posco Future M has proactively expanded supply discussions with multiple global customers, accelerating efforts to build a more resilient and secure supply chain. Vietnam has strategically emerged as an ideal production hub, offering compelling advantages in power, labor, and logistics costs, alongside a highly favorable trade environment with crucial markets like the United States.

Thai Nguyen Province, a significant industrial cluster in northern Vietnam, offers strategic proximity to Hanoi and direct access to the vital port city of Hai Phong. This location facilitates highly efficient sourcing of raw materials and streamlined export of finished anode products. Furthermore, the region boasts a rapidly growing base of foreign manufacturers, fostering strong talent availability and crucial industrial synergies.

Leveraging its extensive manufacturing expertise accumulated in Korea, Posco Future M is poised to produce highly cost-competitive synthetic graphite anodes in Vietnam. These high-quality materials will be supplied to leading global automakers and major battery manufacturers, solidifying its position in the market.

The company has systematically built its robust anode materials business, beginning with the localization of natural graphite production in 2011 and further establishing a sophisticated synthetic graphite production system in Pohang in 2021.

Amidst accelerating global supply chain realignments and new regulatory frameworks emerging in key markets like the US and Europe, Posco Future M is proactively internalizing its entire supply chain. This comprehensive approach covers raw materials, intermediate processing, and final anode production. This strategic move firmly positions the company as a reliable alternative supplier for global customers actively seeking to diversify their battery material supply sources away from concentrated origins.

Posco Future M has also significantly broadened its customer base, demonstrating strong market traction. Last year, it secured a major supply agreement with a prominent Japanese battery maker, followed by substantial additional contracts with global automakers totaling 671 billion won for natural graphite anodes and approximately 1.01 trillion won for synthetic graphite anodes.

The broader Posco Group, with a long-standing presence in Vietnam since its Hanoi office opened in 1991, is poised to strategically expand its footprint. Moving beyond its traditional steel business, the group is now entering battery materials production. This expansion reinforces robust economic cooperation between Korea and Vietnam, simultaneously strengthening Posco Group’s significant presence within Southeast Asia’s rapidly accelerating industrial ecosystem.
