SK Hynix Bonuses Ignite Samsung, Hyundai Workers’ Bonus Demands

SK hynix’s Record Bonuses Reshape South Korean Corporate Compensation, Triggering Samsung Electronics Walkout Threats and Hyundai Motor Union Demands

Propelled by booming demand for AI chips, SK hynix’s significant bonus payouts are recalibrating compensation standards across South Korea’s corporate landscape. This surge in employee rewards has intensified pressure from labor unions at industry giants Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor, who are now pushing for substantially larger financial incentives for their workers, according to Monday’s reports.

SK hynix, projecting an operating profit of approximately 250 trillion won ($169 billion) this year, anticipates distributing an average bonus of around 700 million won per employee early next year. This substantial payout stems from a September labor-management agreement, earmarking 10 percent of the company’s robust earnings for its 35,000-strong workforce.

Market tracker FnGuide’s consensus forecast for SK hynix’s performance this year estimates revenues at 273.59 trillion won and an operating profit of 199.60 trillion won.

Earlier this year, the memory chip behemoth had already distributed profit-sharing bonuses averaging approximately 140 million won per employee in February, as confirmed by industry sources.

These impressive bonuses at SK hynix have ignited significant labor disputes and compensation debates at its direct competitor, Samsung Electronics. Historically, Samsung has been the preferred employer for top talent within the chip sector, known for its slightly higher starting salaries and the prestige associated with the Samsung Group, the nation’s leading conglomerate.

Highlighting a concerning talent drain, Choi Seung-ho, head of the Samsung Electronics unit at the Samsung Group United Union, revealed at a recent press conference in southern Seoul that “approximately 200 employees have transitioned to SK hynix over the last four months. Fair and competitive compensation is essential to retain our skilled workforce.”

The union is advocating for management to allocate a substantial 15 percent of its operating profit specifically for employee bonuses.

According to market analysts, Samsung Electronics’ operating profit is projected to average around 298 trillion won this year. Should the union’s demand be met, this would translate to a staggering 44.7 trillion won dedicated solely to bonuses. For its crucial semiconductor division, employing approximately 77,000 workers, this would result in an average payout of roughly 580 million won per employee.

In response to escalating labor tensions, Samsung management proposed matching SK hynix’s 10 percent operating profit allocation for bonuses. However, the union emphatically rejected this offer and has issued a stern warning of a general strike, slated to run from May 21 to June 7, following a significant rally held Thursday at the company’s Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi Province.

Beyond the semiconductor sector, the labor union at Hyundai Motor has similarly amplified its calls for increased employee bonuses.

As part of its recent wage negotiations, the Hyundai Motor union put forward a proposal demanding the allocation of 30 percent of last year’s net profit for employee payouts. With Hyundai Motor reporting an annual net profit of 10.36 trillion won, industry sources estimate this demand would lead to a total payout exceeding 3 trillion won.

These escalating bonus demands across major South Korean corporations have ignited considerable online debate and public discussion, raising questions about whether such substantial payouts should, in some form, be shared or redistributed to the wider public.

Fueling this public sentiment, an anonymous post on the workplace community app Blind, controversially titled “Why are SK hynix bonuses only for its employees?”, surfaced on Saturday. The post contended that SK hynix’s past recovery was aided by taxpayer funds during a period of financial hardship, suggesting that a portion of its current performance bonuses should consequently be directed back to the public.

It’s worth noting that the company was indeed under creditor management, primarily led by the state-run Korea Development Bank, for close to a decade prior to its acquisition by SK Group in 2011.
