LS Eco Energy announced Tuesday its plans to commence mass production of rare earth metals for defense applications later this year. This initiative aims to establish the company as a key player, and one of the first outside of China, to develop a comprehensive rare earth supply chain.

Through a strategic partnership with Lynas Rare Earths, a leading rare earth supplier headquartered in Australia and among the largest outside of China, LS Eco Energy intends to secure a consistent supply of rare earth raw materials and accelerate its production timeline.

The two companies recently formalized their collaboration with an agreement signed at the Singapore branch of LS Cable & System, the parent company of LS Eco Energy. The partnership will focus on synergistic supply and downstream processing, creating an integrated value chain from Lynas’ raw materials to LS Eco Energy’s metal processing capabilities and LS Cable & System’s advanced magnet manufacturing.

LS Eco Energy is set to install state-of-the-art metal processing facilities at its LS Cable & System Vietnam subsidiary, with mass production targeted to begin within the year. The initial focus will be on producing defense-related materials crucial for aerospace and missile systems, commencing in the second half of 2026. The company plans to broaden its scope to include civilian sectors by 2027, targeting key industries such as robotics, offshore wind power, and electric vehicles (EVs).

The company’s production goals are ambitious, aiming for an annual output of approximately 2,500 tons of rare earth metals. This includes samarium for defense applications and NdPr (neodymium-praseodymium) for robotics and EVs. This capacity is projected to support the production of over 10,000 tons of permanent magnets.

This alliance represents a significant advancement toward establishing a “global rare earth highway,” connecting resource mining to the creation of final products. It also aims to reduce global dependence on China-dominated supply chains, which currently account for over 90 percent of global refined rare earth production, strengthening the supply chain’s resilience through diversification.

LS Eco Energy emphasizes that metal processing is a highly technical and critical aspect of the rare earth sector. Securing both raw material access and advanced processing capabilities provides the company with a substantial competitive advantage.

According to the company, “The global demand for rare earth materials sourced outside of China is experiencing rapid growth, while supply remains constrained. This imbalance has led to an increasing number of inquiries from companies seeking reliable and diversified alternatives.”
