Fans gather hours early as authorities manage one of the city’s largest events in years with strict safety measures
Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul was the epicenter of excitement on Saturday as an estimated 260,000 fans from around the globe flocked to witness BTS’ highly anticipated group performance, marking their return after three years and nine months.
The massive turnout made it the largest gathering in the area since the electric street celebrations during the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea Japan, which drew an impressive crowd of 200,000-250,000 people.
As early as noon, dedicated BTS fans, affectionately known as Army, began arriving at Gwanghwamun Square to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and connect with fellow supporters. Many fans, while not possessing tickets to the main viewing zone, were eager to be part of this momentous occasion.
“I arrived last night to watch the BTS concert and participate in the various activities,” shared Emily Monro, an enthusiastic fan from Australia. “I’ll be overjoyed just to catch a glimpse of any of the members.”
For some international fans, this event was just the prelude to the excitement, as they already held tickets for BTS’ upcoming world tour opening shows at Goyang Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, scheduled from April 9 to 12. They were determined to experience the unique atmosphere of the Gwanghwamun event before the tour kicked off.

Kim Suda, another Australian fan who arrived in Seoul on Thursday, revealed her ambitious plans to stay for four weeks to attend both the Gwanghwamun show and the Goyang Stadium performances.
“I believe the Gwanghwamun show is a powerful statement – it’s like announcing that the king is back,” she explained. “That’s precisely why I wanted to be here, surrounded by fellow Armys. I’ve already connected with people from Mexico, Chile, and more.”
Dian, a dedicated fan from Indonesia, showcased her enthusiasm by donning an Arirang-themed hanbok. She arrived in Seoul on the morning of the show and plans to return in April for the highly anticipated world tour.
“I traveled specifically for the Gwanghwamun show, and I’ll be staying here for five days,” she stated. “I’ll then return to Indonesia before coming back again for the Goyang show on April 9.”
Dian emphasized the special significance of the full-group comeback, stating, “This marks their first comeback in almost four years. I’m incredibly excited to see all the members together. Over the past two years, I’ve only had the opportunity to see Jin and J-Hope.”
Jeanne and Rozenn, two French fans residing in Korea, also joined the throng of eager attendees early in the day to immerse themselves in the festival-like atmosphere.

“We have extremely high expectations for this show. We’ve already listened to the new album, and it’s truly exceptional,” Rozenn remarked.
“We secured tickets last week, so we’re incredibly fortunate to be part of this,” Jeanne added, expressing her excitement.
Throughout the Gwanghwamun area, cafes and restaurants embraced the celebratory mood by introducing BTS-themed promotions and campaigns, further amplifying the excitement surrounding the comeback.
Authorities implemented comprehensive crowd management measures, deploying approximately 15,000 personnel, including police and firefighters. A total of 31 entry gates were strategically positioned at the square, each equipped with metal detectors to ensure the safety and security of attendees by screening for prohibited items.
Pedestrian traffic was carefully regulated, with designated walking lanes established to maintain smooth flow and prevent congestion within the large crowds.

Emergency preparedness was paramount, with visible measures in place throughout the area. Digital screens displayed emergency alerts, and a live evacuation drill was conducted prior to the event, providing instructions in both Korean and English. Volunteers equipped with illuminated batons were on-site to guide attendees effectively.
In anticipation of the performance, BTS conveyed a heartfelt message through their agency, Big Hit Music, acknowledging the immense scale of the event.
“We feel the pressure of performing at such a globally watched event, but that makes us even more determined to deliver a great performance,” the group stated, expressing their commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience.
