Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) has announced its selection as the sole negotiating partner for the Gadeokdo New Airport land reclamation project in Busan, South Korea. This marks a significant milestone in the advancement of one of the nation’s largest infrastructure development initiatives.
Daewoo E&C confirmed Thursday that it officially notified the Public Procurement Service of its intention to proceed with a negotiated contract. The notification followed the procurement agency’s prior confirmation that Daewoo E&C was the only qualified bidder after the project’s prequalification screening.
The company stated its commitment to close collaboration with the Public Procurement Service to expedite negotiations and finalize the contract. Daewoo E&C also plans to establish a joint project office with its partners and to enhance pre-construction reviews focusing on design, construction, quality control, and safety management to ensure a swift commencement of the project.
To mitigate potential ground subsidence concerns while maintaining the project’s timeline, Daewoo E&C will explore alternative construction methods. These include adjustments to reclamation techniques and dredging-replacement approaches. The company will also consult with external experts to determine the optimal basic design for the land reclamation.
The basic design phase is estimated to last approximately six months, after which the project will advance to the detailed design stage. If all proceeds according to plan, Daewoo E&C anticipates the commencement of initial construction activities by the end of the year.
The Gadeokdo New Airport site formation project, a crucial national infrastructure initiative designed to promote balanced regional development and establish a major airport gateway for the southeastern region of Korea, is estimated to cost 10.7 trillion won ($7.3 billion).
“We will execute this state-led project with both speed and a strong sense of responsibility as the exclusive negotiating partner,” stated a Daewoo E&C official.
“We will leverage our extensive expertise in large-scale civil engineering and marine construction projects to ensure comprehensive project preparation, while prioritizing safety and maintaining high quality standards.”
