Na Hong-jin’s “Hope”: Zo In-sung Battles Mysterious Creatures in Intense Sci-Fi Thriller

Director Na Hong-jin’s highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, “Hope,” plunges audiences into a gripping battle for survival as local cops and resilient villagers confront mysterious, formidable creatures. These enigmatic entities abruptly emerge in a remote seaside town, eerily close to Korea’s heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), setting the stage for a tense and action-packed narrative.

Acclaimed actor Zo In-sung leads a crew of young villagers, propelling them into a deadly fight for survival. His riveting action sequences, showcasing incredible physical prowess, are a highlight, deeply penetrating the film’s latter half and driving its thrilling pace.

Navigating the Korean Sci-Fi Landscape

“The genre itself is not easy. Korean sci-fi films have gone through their share of ups and downs, and perhaps that is inevitable for the genre. There are hurdles they have to overcome,” Zo In-sung stated in a recent interview with reporters, acknowledging the sci-fi genre’s challenging position within Korean cinema.

“I thought about whether I should take the safe route or challenge myself, and now that I’m in more of a senior position, I felt it would be better to choose the challenge,” he reflected. “I don’t want my career to become dull… I wanted to keep moving and try something new, even if it does not lead to a good result.” This dedication to pushing boundaries defines his approach to the intense new creature feature.

Zo In-sung’s Physical and Emotional Challenge in “Hope”

On a physical level, performing the intense action choreography for “Hope” presented a significant challenge for the actor, who has previously undergone knee surgery. His commitment to the role of Sung-ki required immense dedication.

“After receiving the scenario, I knew it wouldn’t be easy… wanting to do something and being physically ready for it is different. I deliberated on whether I could really throw my body into it and made the decision,” he shared, highlighting the rigorous demands of the film’s creature-feature narrative.

While the raw power and energy conveyed through the gripping action sequences are central to the 156-minute film, Zo In-sung emphasized the critical importance of its intricate details. To achieve this, the actor meticulously focused on Sung-ki’s relationships with his fellow villagers and his nuanced reactions upon encountering the extraterrestrial beings, aiming to maximize the sensation of fear for the audience.

“The first scene of the film is very important; it shows how they are all connected… their relationship and (Sung-ki’s) facial expression play out to show how fearful it can be when they disappear one by one,” Zo explained, underscoring the psychological depth woven into this thrilling sci-fi horror.

A Prolific Year and Global Aspirations for the Korean Star

This year has been exceptionally prolific for the renowned Korean actor. Following his role in the action-romance “Humint,” released in February, Zo In-sung captivated audiences with “Hope,” which garnered significant attention at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and is set for its local release next week. Furthermore, fans can anticipate his appearance in the upcoming Netflix film “Possible Love,” also scheduled for release later this year.

“I want to run away,” he humorously quipped, reflecting on the packed schedule. “I didn’t know that all three movies will be released in the same year… It would be good if audiences felt I did my job. I’m really curious how they will see it.”

When questioned about potential ventures overseas following “Hope”‘s buzz at Cannes, Zo In-sung articulated his primary goal: to continue participating in strong, impactful projects within Korea. “I’ve only just started to get somewhat comfortable acting in Korean. To act at that level in English would probably take me another 46 years, which means it’s almost impossible,” he stated candidly.

“I’m more focused on making good work locally in Korea and hope it can reach audiences overseas, as ‘Hope’ has. It’s not something I can force to happen. My goal is to make strong work in Korea first.” His dedication firmly roots him in the burgeoning Korean film industry, striving to create compelling narratives that resonate globally.
