Ivy's Broadway Debut: Korean Musicals Seek U.S. Hearts

Korean musical sensation Ivy, at 44, is preparing for her highly anticipated Broadway debut as the iconic Roxie Hart in the acclaimed musical “Chicago.” Set to grace the Ambassador Theatre in New York from August 17 to September 6, her casting follows an extensive year-long audition process.

Reflecting on her journey at a recent press conference, Ivy shared, “It’s been 16 years since my musical debut. I may be older, and my English isn’t perfect, but I believe this monumental opportunity arose from my unwavering dedication to a single artistic path over many years.”

Ivy is no stranger to the role of Roxie Hart; she first captivated audiences in the Korean production of “Chicago” back in 2012. Since then, she has embodied the character for six seasons, performing in nearly 600 shows until 2024, demonstrating profound familiarity with the iconic part.

She noted the deep connection she feels with the character: “As I performed, I recognized Roxie’s aspiration to become a star, despite facing numerous difficulties, mirrored my own journey. I believe this personal resonance likely connected deeply with audiences.”

Despite her extensive experience, the language barrier remains a significant challenge as Ivy prepares for her Broadway debut. This is particularly daunting given that Roxie Hart’s role is one of the most dialogue-heavy in the entire musical.

Interestingly, Ivy revealed she had been offered an audition for the role four years prior but declined, citing concerns over the language barrier at that time.

“I didn’t possess that courage back then,” she admitted. “But this time, I decided that even if the outcome wasn’t successful, the process itself would undeniably enhance my skills as a performer.”

Throughout the rigorous audition process, which included performing the musical number “Funny Honey” and Roxie’s pivotal monologue, Ivy candidly shared that she received constructive feedback specifically regarding her English pronunciation.

“As a native Korean speaker, every aspect feels incredibly daunting,” Ivy confessed. “While perfect pronunciation may be an elusive goal, my unwavering commitment is to tirelessly work and authentically convey the powerful messages of ‘Chicago’ through every line and song.” To achieve this, she diligently studies with a team of nine English tutors.

She concluded with a powerful mission: “I will give my utmost best, hoping that American audiences will embrace Korean musicals and that I can leave a lasting positive impression as an ambassador representing South Korea on the Broadway stage.”

Singer-actor Ivy speaks in a press conference in Seoul on June 23, 2026, where she discussed her upcoming Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in the musical
