Get ready for a nostalgic trip down K-pop memory lane with the upcoming Korean comedy film “Wild Sing.” Starring a powerhouse trio – Gang Dong-won, Uhm Tae-goo, and Park Ji-hyun – this movie brings to life the story of Triangle, a once-popular K-pop idol group determined to make a grand comeback two decades after their prime.
Renowned for his serious and often intense roles, actor Gang Dong-won takes on a surprisingly lighthearted challenge as Hyun-woo, the charismatic leader and main dancer of Triangle. This comedic turn marks a refreshing departure for Gang, showcasing his versatility.
“When I read the script, the idea of doing a headspin struck me as incredibly funny,” Gang shared at a Seoul press conference. “I aimed for a uniquely humorous blend – something both poignant and laugh-out-loud funny.”
Despite his limited prior knowledge of hip-hop, Gang dedicated five months to intensive breakdancing practice. This immersive experience cultivated a profound respect for K-pop idols and their demanding careers. “I truly understood the immense challenges idol artists face, and throughout filming, my admiration for them grew,” the actor explained, hoping the film would effectively convey their struggles.
Uhm Tae-goo, known for his introverted persona, also underwent rigorous training for his role as Sang-gu, Triangle’s former rapper who later transitioned into an insurance salesman. His commitment included almost daily rap training sessions at JYP Entertainment, the celebrated agency behind global K-pop sensations like TWICE, Stray Kids, and ITZY.
Actress Park Ji-hyun, typically seen in calm and nuanced characters, reveals a vibrant new facet of her acting prowess. She portrays Do-mi, the sole female member of the trio, who maintains a sweet on-stage image but is fiercely tough behind the scenes.
Directed by Son Jae-gon, “Wild Sing” also boasts an impressive supporting cast of veteran actors. Oh Jung-se plays Sung-gon, a rival artist consistently ranking second on local music charts, while Shin Ha-kyun embodies Yong-gu, the astute producer behind the legendary group Triangle.
Adding to the film’s nostalgic charm is the music video for Triangle’s debut hit, “Love Is.” This meticulously crafted visual transports viewers back to the early 2000s, featuring the trio in iconic jerseys, chunky necklaces, earrings, and goggles. The video has already captivated audiences, racking up over 2 million views on YouTube, sparking significant buzz for the movie.
“We all have moments where we aspire to shine brightly,” Gang Dong-won remarked, inviting audiences. “I truly hope viewers will embrace and enjoy this film in that spirit.”
“Wild Sing” is officially slated for release on June 3. Don’t miss this hilarious and heartwarming K-pop comedy!
