BTS Massive World Tour: Purple Wave Returns

By Shim Sun-ah

K-pop sensation BTS captivated fans at Goyang Stadium, just northwest of Seoul, during the second night of their highly anticipated “Arirang” world tour. This monumental global tour, featuring 85 shows across 34 cities, solidifies its status as the largest tour ever by a K-pop artist, drawing immense international attention. The three-night residency in Goyang follows their spectacular opening show on Thursday, kicking off an unprecedented global journey for the iconic group.

Tens of thousands of ARMYs erupted in deafening cheers as the seven BTS members, clad in striking all-black attire, stormed the stage following a powerful performance by dancers. The show powerfully opened with “Hooligan,” a dynamic track from their recently released fifth studio album, “Arirang,” setting an electrifying tone for the evening.

Following the seamless performances of “Aliens,” another hit from their new album, and the high-energy “Run BTS,” Jungkook addressed the enthusiastic crowd. “The weather is much better than yesterday,” he noted. “Isn’t it cold? It may still be a little chilly, but we’ll warm you up,” promising an unforgettable experience for the BTS ARMY.

Concert-goers and performers alike had braved rainfall on the opening night, making the improved weather a welcome change for the Goyang Stadium event.

As Jin urged the crowd to maintain their incredible energy before the next song, fans filled the stadium with thunderous shouts, their purple light sticks glowing brightly. This iconic color, representing the global BTS fandom, ARMY, created a breathtaking sea of unity and support.

Throughout the concert, BTS showcased a diverse setlist, blending their chart-topping new tracks with beloved classics. Fans were treated to “Swim,” the lead single from “Arirang,” alongside fan favorites like “Body to Body,” “2.0,” “Fake Love,” “Butter,” and “Dynamite,” highlighting the group’s journey through their illustrious K-pop career.

The innovative 360-degree stage setup at Goyang Stadium offered an unparalleled viewing experience, ensuring every fan had a clear perspective. The BTS members frequently utilized the large, elevated circular main platform, moving in wide circles and turning to face all sections of the arena, maximizing interaction with their devoted global fanbase.

With their new album “Arirang” intentionally capturing the group’s profound Korean identity, named after a traditional folk song of longing and separation, the concert production was richly enhanced with evocative cultural motifs. These elements beautifully reflected the album’s core sentiments, deeply resonating with the audience.

During “they don’t know ’bout us,” dancers adorned with screens displaying traditional Korean masks added a captivating visual layer. “Merry Go Round” featured expansive, flowing fabrics inspired by “seungmu,” a graceful Buddhist dance, creating a truly artistic spectacle. In “Body to Body,” dancers performed a traditional Korean circle dance, utilizing LED flags and ribbon props reminiscent of “sangmo,” the distinctive ribboned headgear found in authentic Korean folk performances, further celebrating their rich heritage.

The electric atmosphere reached its pinnacle with dynamic performances of “Mic Drop” and “Fire,” before transitioning into “Body to Body.” This song notably prompted a resounding singalong of the “Arirang” melody sampled within, uniting the crowd in a powerful moment. Later, BTS delivered an iconic performance of “Idol,” marching around the venue accompanied by dancers carrying a vibrant array of flags, symbolizing their global influence.

After closing the show with several more powerful songs, frontman RM humbly bowed, expressing deep gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support and patient wait for the group’s return.

RM acknowledged the numerous changes within BTS but emphasized that the fundamental essence remained constant. “The seven of us decided to do this together, and what has not changed is our sincerity toward you,” he affirmed. He added that the sight of Goyang Stadium filled with devoted fans was never taken for granted. “These are decisions we made after 15 years of working together and decisions we made to stay together for a long time, so please be generous with the changes, keep watching us and trust us. Thank you. We will work hard,” a poignant message of commitment to the global ARMY.

These Goyang concerts followed a landmark free concert at Gwanghwamun Square in the heart of Seoul, celebrating the release of “Arirang.” This album marks BTS’s highly anticipated first group project in three years and nine months, drawing over 100,000 fans, according to organizer Hybe, a testament to their enduring popularity.

The K-pop supergroup went on hiatus in June 2022, with all seven members fulfilling their mandatory military duty. Three years later, their powerful reunion ignited the recording of their new album, signaling a triumphant return to the global music scene.

“Arirang” has achieved remarkable success, topping the prestigious Billboard 200 albums chart for two consecutive weeks—a historic first for any K-pop act. The album’s lead single, “Swim,” also made a phenomenal debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, before securing the No. 2 spot in its second week, further solidifying BTS’s global impact.

BTS will hold their third and final show in Goyang on Sunday before embarking for Tokyo, where the “Arirang” world tour continues its journey on April 17-18, promising more unforgettable performances for fans across the globe.
