Ahead of the highly anticipated concert at Gwanghwamun Square, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Seoul Metropolitan Police have announced strict crowd control measures. Authorities will ensure a density of no more than one person per square meter within the designated zone, prioritizing public safety throughout the event.
Police anticipate a massive turnout of approximately 260,000 attendees in the area spanning from Gwanghwamun Square to Sungnye Gate. This is expected to be the largest gathering since the 2002 World Cup, which saw crowds of up to 250,000 people cheering in the streets.
To maintain order and security, random checkpoints will be in operation on the day of the concert. A significant police presence will be deployed, comprising 72 teams of riot police and 35 teams of detectives.
Concertgoers entering the crowd control zone will be subject to mandatory security checks, including passing through metal detectors and searches for any potentially hazardous materials.
“We are committed to creating the safest possible environment, recognizing the open and accessible nature of this downtown event. This decision is also made with the memory of the Itaewon tragedy in mind,” stated the official, referencing the devastating 2022 crowd crush that resulted in 159 fatalities.
