K-pop sensation Kiss of Life has marked its return, aiming to reconnect with its core identity through the release of their new physical single, “Who Is She,” which dropped on Monday.
Debuting in July 2023 with their successful first EP, “Kiss of Life,” the girl group rapidly captivated fans with their distinctive sound, a vibrant blend of R&B, hip-hop, and dance-pop, often infused with a nostalgic 2000s vibe. Their latest title track, “Who Is She,” exemplifies this unique style, reinterpreting early 2000s aesthetics with a fresh, modern twist. During a recent showcase held in Seoul on Monday, member Julie elaborated on the group’s journey: “Three years may seem short or long, depending on one’s perspective, but this period has been profoundly significant for us. It prompted us to reflect on our original mindset. For Kiss of Life, that essence embodies our profound passion and love for music. Our ultimate goal is for audiences to genuinely feel our sincerity and dedication through our performances on stage.”
Group member Belle insightfully characterized the song’s evocative title as a symbolic and universal question.
Belle explained, “’Who is she?’ resonates as a deceptively simple yet profoundly meaningful question that every individual confronts at various junctures in life. Rather than attempting to provide a definitive answer, our ambition is to present a captivating performance that intrinsically sparks this very question in the minds of our audience when they witness us on stage.”
The single’s compelling overarching theme explores “gaze and identity,” a concept vividly woven into its comprehensive promotional campaign and the intricate narrative of its music video. Within a meticulously crafted environment of surveillance and control, the talented K-pop group powerfully embodies the role of an “underdog,” an identity often imposed or defined by external perceptions.
Julie further clarified that this powerful concept organically originated from the group’s unwavering mindset and philosophical approach since their debut.
