**BTS’s “Arirang” Makes K-Pop History, Dominating Billboard 200 for Second Consecutive Week**
In an unprecedented achievement for K-pop, BTS’s fifth studio album, “Arirang,” has secured the No. 1 position on the highly coveted Billboard 200 albums chart for a second consecutive week. This landmark accomplishment marks the first time any K-pop album has ever achieved such a feat, underscoring BTS’s enduring global impact.
According to Billboard’s chart preview released on Sunday, “Arirang” successfully defended its top spot on the main albums chart. It outranked significant new releases, including Ye’s “Bully,” which debuted at No. 2, and Melanie Martinez’s “Hades” at No. 3. This latest triumph further solidifies BTS’s legacy, marking their seventh No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.
The Billboard 200 methodology ranks albums based on a comprehensive evaluation that includes physical album sales, streaming equivalent albums (SEA), and track equivalent albums (TEA).
During the most recent tracking week, “Arirang” recorded an impressive 187,000 album-equivalent units. While this figure represented a 71 percent decrease from its debut week, it was robust enough to maintain its position at the top of the Billboard 200. Physical album sales accounted for 114,000 units, while streaming activity contributed 65,000 units, and digital track sales added 8,000 units to the total.
“Arirang” made an explosive debut, posting 641,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. Billboard reported this as the highest figure recorded for any group since the chart began calculating performance using album units in December 2014, and notably, the biggest weekly total for any artist in 2026.
The critically acclaimed “Arirang” album features 14 tracks, spearheaded by the lead single “Swim.” This track debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week and is projected to remain a strong contender within the top 10 on the upcoming chart, showcasing its widespread appeal.
Released on March 20, BTS’s new album signified the end of their three-year hiatus from full-group activities. Through “Arirang,” the group explores their profound identity as artists who began their musical journey in Korea, delving into the universal emotions and experiences the members have encountered throughout their career.
Industry observers note that “Arirang’s” exceptional performance reflects a strategic shift in K-pop’s global approach. The album masterfully combines collaborations with renowned international producers like Diplo and Ryan Tedder, alongside deeply integrated Korean cultural elements. Examples include the melody of the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang” in “Body to Body,” the resonant bell sound of the Sacred Bell of King Seongdeok in “No. 29,” and RM’s lyrical reference to independence activist Kim Koo in “Aliens.”
This innovative approach appears to be a deliberate push by BTS towards the mainstream, aiming to attract a wider global audience beyond their dedicated fandom, Army. Supporting this transition, data from Spotify indicates a significant surge of over 690 percent in new listeners discovering BTS following the release of “Arirang.”
Culture critic Kim Heon-sik, in an interview with The Korea Herald, commented on this trend: “The increase in new listeners can be interpreted as a model of transition from one that was more catered toward BTS’s fandom to one driven by wider cultural consumption.”
Kim further emphasized the album’s potential as a benchmark for future releases: “As K-pop continues to evolve, ‘Arirang’ could serve as a blueprint for future endeavors — one that successfully combines global collaboration, cultural authenticity, and expanded audience reach.”
