Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) announced Monday the significant expansion of its dedicated cargo facility for United Parcel Service (UPS), quadrupling its previous capacity. This strategic move aims to bolster South Korea’s critical supply chain and enhance its import-handling capabilities for global trade.
The American logistics giant, UPS, invested approximately 30 billion won (approximately $20 million USD) into enlarging its specialized freight terminal at Incheon Airport. This substantial upgrade elevates the annual import throughput capacity from 27,000 metric tons to an impressive 190,000 tons, marking a pivotal increase in logistics efficiency.
This newly expanded UPS cargo facility is poised to significantly accelerate the flow of essential components and consumer goods into South Korea’s diverse industrial supply chain. By alleviating potential bottlenecks, it strengthens domestic manufacturing resilience, particularly amidst global shipping route disruptions and geopolitical instability in regions like the Middle East.
“Even as global logistics encounter significant challenges, Incheon Airport remains steadfast in its role as a premier global hub, actively supporting our national economy,” stated Kim Bum-ho, acting president of Incheon International Airport Corporation. He added, “We are committed to collaborative efforts with freight carriers to cultivate a highly competitive logistics ecosystem, seamlessly aligning with the government’s long-term strategic vision.”
This key development further solidifies Incheon Airport’s ambition to be recognized as Northeast Asia’s leading air freight gateway. The expansion is backed by robust growth in cargo networks and ongoing investment in advanced smart logistics infrastructure. Last year, Incheon Airport proudly secured the third global ranking for international cargo operations, managing a remarkable 2.95 million tons.
