Hyundai Motor Group Considers Swapping US AI Unit for Full Boston Dynamics Ownership Ahead of IPO

Hyundai Motor Group is reportedly considering a strategic exchange, proposing to swap its US-based artificial intelligence research arm for SoftBank’s remaining stake in Boston Dynamics. This move would grant the South Korean automaker full ownership of the renowned robotics company, a significant step in anticipation of its planned initial public offering (IPO).

According to recent media reports, if this deal materializes, Hyundai would acquire the outstanding 9.65 percent stake in Boston Dynamics currently held by SoftBank. This transaction would transform Boston Dynamics into a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group. Concurrently, Hyundai would transfer its Robotics and AI Institute (RAI) to the Japanese conglomerate.

Established in Massachusetts in 2022 through a collaboration between Hyundai and Boston Dynamics, RAI received over $400 million in funding. Its core mission is to advance critical AI and robotics technologies, including sophisticated robot perception, advanced decision-making capabilities, and continuous learning algorithms.

SoftBank’s Strategic Interest in AI Research

Industry observers suggest that offering RAI as part of this strategic swap significantly enhances the deal’s appeal for SoftBank. While SoftBank’s current minority stake in Boston Dynamics offers limited influence and liquidity before the robotics firm’s market debut, gaining RAI would provide direct ownership of a substantial long-term AI and robotics research asset.

An industry analyst, speaking anonymously, commented, “If SoftBank acquires RAI, it’s unlikely to be resold to another entity. Instead, it could serve as an in-house research and development platform, enabling SoftBank to build its own comprehensive AI-powered robotics ecosystem.”

Historically, SoftBank has operated primarily as an investment firm, leveraging its Vision Fund to acquire and divest stakes in high-growth companies. However, Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son is aggressively pivoting the company towards becoming a leading AI powerhouse.

During a recent shareholder meeting in Tokyo, Son articulated his ambitious vision to spearhead the race toward “artificial superintelligence,” an AI he posits will surpass human intelligence by 10,000 times. Further demonstrating this commitment, Son unveiled that SoftBank has commenced robot manufacturing at its new “physical AI factory,” which he described as the world’s first large-scale facility where robots are entirely constructed by other robots.

Hyundai’s Path to Boston Dynamics IPO and Streamlined Operations

For Hyundai Motor Group, assuming full ownership of Boston Dynamics is expected to streamline the company’s business structure, particularly as it prepares for the robotics firm’s public listing. RAI, with its focus on long-term foundational research, entails substantial R&D expenses that could potentially impact Boston Dynamics’ financial performance and raise investor concerns.

By divesting RAI, the robotics arm could present a clearer and more attractive path to profitability and commercialization for potential investors. This strategic separation aims to optimize Boston Dynamics’ financial profile ahead of its IPO.

Should current shareholders absorb SoftBank’s stake proportionally, their ownership percentages would adjust as follows:

  • Hyundai Motor: From 27.96 percent to 30.95 percent
  • Kia: From 17.22 percent to 19.06 percent
  • Hyundai Mobis: From 11.20 percent to 12.40 percent
  • Executive Chair Chung Euisun: From 22.57 percent to 24.98 percent
  • Hyundai Glovis: From 11.40 percent to 12.62 percent

This revised ownership structure is crucial for advancing the commercialization of cutting-edge developments like the Atlas humanoid robot and paving the way for Boston Dynamics’ anticipated IPO in 2028. Moreover, it is poised to facilitate the attraction of pre-IPO investment and secure essential growth capital leading up to the listing.
