South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo recently convened a crucial meeting with ambassadors from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to explore advanced strategies for deepening economic collaboration between South Korea and the dynamic ASEAN region, his office confirmed.
During the impactful discussions, Minister Yeo and the ASEAN Committee in Seoul thoroughly reviewed a range of initiatives designed to significantly boost bilateral cooperation. Key topics included strategic trade expansion, crucial enhancements to the existing Korea-ASEAN free trade agreement (FTA), and bolstering supply chain collaboration, according to information released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
These pivotal talks unfold amidst a backdrop of escalating global trade and geopolitical uncertainties, highlighting the urgency of robust regional partnerships.
The ASEAN committee present at the meeting was composed of ambassadors representing 11 ASEAN member states, notably including Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Addressing the ongoing efforts to upgrade the bilateral FTA between Korea and ASEAN, Minister Yeo underscored Seoul’s commitment. He stated that the government aims to achieve substantial progress in negotiations to expand and modernize this vital trade agreement by 2027, as conveyed by the ministry.
Minister Yeo further elaborated that the FTA requires an essential upgrade to integrate contemporary digital regulations and to effectively address the rapid transformations occurring within the global trade environment.
