Leading semiconductor and electronics manufacturers in South Korea are approaching a significant milestone: an average monthly salary of 10 million won ($6,700) per employee. This remarkable wage growth is largely fueled by the artificial intelligence (AI)-led chip boom and substantial performance bonuses.
Data released Sunday by the Korean Statistical Information Service indicates that the average monthly wage for regular employees at major South Korean businesses – those with 300 or more workers – within the “electronic components, computers, video, audio and communication equipment manufacturing” sector reached 9.42 million won in 2025. This represents a significant 13 percent increase from the previous year.
This comprehensive figure encompasses regular salaries, overtime compensation, and special performance-based bonuses.
This impressive increase significantly outpaced the 6.9 percent average wage growth observed across all large manufacturing businesses. Furthermore, it positioned the sector as the second-fastest growing in terms of compensation among detailed industry categories, trailing only water transport.
Beyond its rapid growth, the sector consistently ranks among South Korea’s highest-paying industries. It is surpassed only by manufacturing of coke and petroleum products, postal and telecommunications services, financial services, and water transport.
Industry observers attribute this sharp wage increase to a robust recovery in semiconductor earnings and enhanced performance bonuses for major chipmakers. This trend coincides with booming global investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
The positive impact has been particularly evident at industry leaders Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, both of whom have significantly benefited from surging global demand for high-performance AI memory chips.
Samsung Electronics’ 2025 business report, released in March, revealed that the company’s average annual employee salary surged to a record 158 million won. This marks a substantial 21.5 percent increase from the 130 million won recorded the previous year.
SK hynix experienced an even more dramatic rise, with its average employee salary climbing to an unprecedented 185 million won in 2025. This represents an astonishing 58.1 percent leap from 117 million won in the prior year.
Analysts predict the sector is poised to exceed the 10 million won monthly salary threshold for the first time this year. This milestone is achievable if wages continue to rise by another 6.2 percent or more, buoyed by the ongoing semiconductor supercycle.
