Samsung Electronics has strongly refuted allegations of unauthorized use of photos featuring the globally recognized pop star, Dua Lipa, following a major lawsuit filed by her team.
On the 12th, Samsung Electronics issued an official statement regarding the unauthorized image use lawsuit brought forward by Dua Lipa’s representatives. “The claim that we used the artist’s image without proper permission is fundamentally untrue,” Samsung declared. “We meticulously verified the usage rights for the image through our trusted content provision partner before its deployment.”
Furthermore, Samsung Electronics affirmed, “We have maintained continuous dialogue with Dua Lipa’s team up until recently and are fully committed to seeking an amicable and satisfactory resolution to this matter.”
Previously, on the 8th (local time), various local media outlets reported that Dua Lipa had initiated legal proceedings by filing a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The suit alleges significant copyright and publicity rights infringement, with demands for damages reportedly reaching approximately $15 million (equivalent to about 22 billion Korean Won).
According to the filed complaint, Samsung Electronics has allegedly been featuring Dua Lipa’s image on its TV product packaging since last year. Dua Lipa’s team claims to have become aware of this unauthorized usage and subsequently requested its immediate discontinuation. However, the lawsuit states that Samsung Electronics purportedly failed to comply, continuing to utilize the image without consent.
Dua Lipa’s representatives emphasized in their assertion, “Her facial photograph was extensively used in large-scale marketing campaigns without any prior consent or consultation, and entirely outside of her control. Dua Lipa categorically states that she never authorized the use of this specific image, and even if such a proposal had been formally presented, she would not have given her approval.”
