Def Jam Recordings CEO’s social media follow, studio sightings with Genia fuel speculation over K-pop singer’s next move
K-pop solo artist Mark, formerly of NCT, is generating significant buzz about a potential relaunch of his music career in the United States, merely a month after his departure from both the boy band and SM Entertainment.
This speculation intensified following social media activity from Tunji Balogun, the esteemed Chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, who began following Mark shortly after the K-pop singer’s exclusive contract with SM Entertainment concluded on April 8.
Balogun is widely recognized as a pivotal figure in the global music industry. His impressive track record includes developing artists like Khalid, SZA, and Bryson Tiller during his tenure at RCA Records before he took the helm at Def Jam Recordings, further solidifying the label’s reputation.
Within the dynamic K-pop landscape, a social media follow from a major label executive to a high-profile artist is rarely considered mere coincidence. It is frequently interpreted as a strong indicator of potential future collaborations or serious partnership discussions, rather than simply casual interest.
Def Jam Recordings, a legendary label, is renowned for its significant influence in hip-hop and R&B, genres that closely align with Mark’s established musical direction. As a Canadian artist fluent in English, Mark is uniquely positioned for a successful foray into the North American music market.
The K-pop singer himself alluded to a significant new direction in a heartfelt handwritten letter shared on social media on April 3. In it, he spoke of ‘beginning a new chapter’ and fondly recalled his long-standing interest in busking with an acoustic guitar and crafting songs in English, further hinting at his global aspirations.
Further fueling the buzz, Mark was also recently featured in a video uploaded on April 23 by emerging pop artist Genia. The clip, captioned “Genia x Mark Lee !! When KPop & POP Meet,” strongly suggested a collaboration between the two artists in a recording studio. Notably, Genia herself signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2024 and launched her single “Doomsday” in April.
Mark’s individual commercial potential is already well-established. He successfully launched his solo career under SM Entertainment with the full-length album “The Firstfruit” in April 2025. This album impressively recorded over 540,000 first-week sales, setting a new first-week sales record for solo artists under SM Entertainment.
While Mark has yet to make an official announcement regarding his new agency, anticipation is rapidly building around the prospect of him signing with a major US label for this exciting next chapter of his burgeoning career.
