Cravity's 'Redefine': A New Chapter of Growth and Future

As contract renewal nears, group reflects on identity, growth and what comes next

With its eighth EP “Redefine,” K-pop group Cravity delves into introspection, navigating themes of growth, uncertainty, and self-redefinition through a compelling six-track release.

Fronted by the lead single “Awake,” this pivotal album signifies both a creative evolution and a significant transitional phase for the K-pop sensation, Cravity.

The release of “Redefine” arrives at a particularly poignant juncture for Cravity. As the group marks six years in their career with crucial contract renewal discussions on the horizon, member Wonjin revealed that the future of Cravity was a key topic among members prior to preparing for this comeback.

Wonjin elaborated, stating, “We discussed contract renewals, but with a comeback imminent and our devoted fans awaiting, we felt prioritizing that conversation might create discomfort. Ultimately, we concluded that our only path forward is to work harder and with greater sincerity. This perspective made the creation of this ‘Redefine’ album feel even more profound and precious to us.”

Crucially, the members stressed that this process of self-redefinition for Cravity does not imply a rejection of their past achievements or identity.

Taeyoung further explained, “While not every endeavor can be entirely satisfying, our constant drive is to push boundaries and evolve. We perceived ‘redefinition’ as synonymous with growth, which ultimately shaped the core concept of our new album. For Cravity, redefining doesn’t equate to negating our history. Every experience has contributed to who we are as a group, and this album serves as a framework to synthesize that journey and establish a more defined trajectory for our future.”

Hyeongjun elaborated that despite “Redefine’s” potentially dark aesthetic on the surface, its underlying message firmly centers on personal growth and resilience, not fear.

Hyeongjun continued, “Because ‘Redefine’ explores profound themes such as fear and personal struggles, some might initially perceive it as a somber album. However, its true essence isn’t to dwell in those emotions, but rather to foster self-development and overcome them. While our previous K-pop album celebrated the vibrancy of youth, with ‘Redefine,’ we aimed to reveal a more profound dimension – the journey of advancing resolutely even when faced with adversity.”

Beyond its overarching concept, the “Redefine” EP also highlights the Cravity members’ increasing creative input. Notably, Taeyoung’s “Love Me Like You Do” stands as his debut self-composed track featured on a Cravity album. Meanwhile, Wonjin and Allen collaborated on writing and composing the heartfelt fan song, “Spring, with You,” which was specially prereleased to coincide with the group’s anniversary in early April.

Wonjin shared his creative vision for “Spring, with You,” explaining that he intended the song to metaphorically compare periods of separation from their dedicated fanbase, Luvity, to the coldness of winter, with Luvity symbolizing the comforting warmth of spring.

He elaborated, “Whenever I’m separated from our fans, it truly feels like winter – cold, dark, and a season difficult to brave alone. Yet, the mere thought of Luvity, even their gentle smiles, brings back the feeling of spring. Even when my own moments become bleak and exhausting, our fans are the constant source of warmth, reminding me of that vibrant season. I wished to convey my heartfelt hope that they remain exactly as they are – the incredible individuals who provide me with such profound warmth.”

Allen chimed in, noting that the process of writing “Spring, with You” evoked vivid memories of Cravity’s debut days.

He continued, “As I meticulously crafted the lyrics, reminiscing about our beginnings, Luvity became even more invaluable to me. There’s a particular line in the song I cherish: ‘Will you warmly hold me so I won’t be afraid of anything?’ Through this, I aimed to convey directly that regardless of any future challenges, Cravity and Luvity can always find strength and solace in each other.”

Regarding Cravity’s aspirations for “Redefine,” the members articulated a desire to demonstrably showcase their artistic growth, emphasizing that this pursuit transcends a mere obsession with quantifiable results.

Hyeongjun expressed, “My ambition is to deliver performances truly worthy of our unique nickname, ‘Perfor-vity.’ While topping music charts or securing wins on music shows would be incredible achievements, my primary goal is for us to evolve into artists who consistently strive towards, and ultimately attain, such recognition, rather than solely fixating on immediate outcomes.”

Taeyoung, with a lighthearted laugh, candidly shared that his personal objective for Cravity is to achieve a “distinct and undeniable form of success.”

He elaborated, “Should a Cravity song or album successfully enter the prestigious Billboard charts, I would unequivocally consider that a definitive success. Given that powerful, darker tracks frequently resonate well with international audiences, I would be incredibly delighted if ‘Redefine’ could be the album that propels us to that global recognition.”

Cravity’s highly anticipated six-track EP, “Redefine,” officially became available on all major streaming platforms at 6 p.m. KST on Wednesday.
