Red Ginseng Mitigates Muscle Loss in Women: Study Findings
Jung Tae-ha, professor at Yonsei University’s Wonju College of Medicine, presents his team’s research findings at the spring conference of the Korean Society of Ginseng held at Jeonbuk National University on April 22. (Korean Society of Ginseng)

Recent scientific studies reveal exciting **red ginseng benefits**, suggesting its potential to combat age-related muscle loss and reduce fat accumulation in **postmenopausal women**. Research also points to improved **metabolic health** through positive changes in the **gut microbiome**, underscoring red ginseng’s holistic impact on health.

These groundbreaking findings were first presented at the prestigious spring conference of the **Korean Society of Ginseng**, hosted on April 22 at **Jeonbuk National University**, highlighting cutting-edge **ginseng research**.

**Sarcopenia**, **obesity**, and **diabetes** are significant **metabolic conditions** increasingly linked to **aging**. Specifically, **sarcopenia**, characterized by progressive muscle loss and impaired function, was officially recognized as a disease by the World Health Organization in 2016 and by Korea in 2021. **Postmenopausal women** face a heightened risk, experiencing an annual **muscle mass decline** of approximately 0.6 percent primarily due to reduced estrogen.

In a rigorous double-blind, randomized controlled trial, a research team led by Professor **Jung Tae-ha** from **Yonsei University’s Wonju College of Medicine** investigated red ginseng’s efficacy. The study involved 51 **postmenopausal women** aged 50 and above.

For eight weeks, participants were divided into a **red ginseng group** or a placebo group, each taking 2 grams daily.

While both groups experienced some **muscle loss**, the **red ginseng group** showed a significantly reduced decline. The median total muscle loss was a remarkable 178 grams in the red ginseng group, compared to 595 grams in the placebo group. Furthermore, **fat mass** increased considerably in the placebo group, yet participants taking **red ginseng** experienced no significant fat gain, demonstrating its protective effects on **postmenopausal health**.

These positive effects, including significant reductions in both **muscle loss** and **fat gain**, were even more pronounced among non-obese participants. Importantly, comprehensive blood tests revealed no abnormal findings, strongly supporting the **safety of red ginseng** supplementation.

Professor Jung Tae-ha commented, “This study clearly demonstrates **red ginseng’s potential** to effectively suppress **age-related muscle loss** and limit **fat gain in postmenopausal women**.” He further noted that its preventive use could significantly help slow the progression of **sarcopenia**.

In a separate, complementary study, a research team led by **Moon Ki-sung** from **Korea National University of Transportation** explored the efficacy of **red ginseng extract** using obese mouse models.

The results were compelling: mice administered the extract exhibited lower **weight gain**, notably improved **blood glucose** levels, and reduced **insulin resistance**. Further **microbiome analysis** pinpointed increased levels of beneficial gut bacteria, including *Roseburia intestinalis*, strongly suggesting that these positive **gut microbiota changes** are key to the observed **metabolic improvements**.

The comprehensive conference showcased over a dozen new **red ginseng studies**, covering diverse areas such as its **anti-inflammatory effects** and even **hangover relief**, bringing together approximately 100 dedicated researchers in the field.
