Hanwha Defense USA announced a strategic partnership with Magnet Defense on Tuesday, aimed at the joint development and production of advanced medium unmanned surface vessels (MUSVs). This collaboration is specifically designed to meet the evolving demands of future U.S. defense strategies and capabilities.
The landmark agreement was formalized at the prestigious Sea-Air-Space Exposition 2026, aligning perfectly with the U.S. Navy’s accelerating initiatives to procure cutting-edge unmanned naval platforms. These autonomous vessels are crucial for addressing complex and evolving operational requirements in modern naval warfare.
Central to this partnership is the joint production of the H38, a formidable 38-meter medium unmanned surface vessel, slated for supply to the U.S. Department of Defense. This innovative vessel will leverage Magnet Defense’s proven M48 platform, enhanced by the integration of Hanwha’s sophisticated manufacturing prowess and advanced defense technologies.
Beyond the H38, the collaboration extends to pioneering an AI-based robotic shipyard and developing advanced accompanying software. This state-of-the-art facility is envisioned to achieve exceptionally high levels of automation, mirroring the efficiency of modern automotive assembly plants. Industry reports project its operational launch by the close of next year, marking a significant leap in naval manufacturing capabilities.
Michael Coulter, CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, highlighted the core strength of this alliance, stating, “The partnership seamlessly integrates Hanwha’s robust manufacturing and advanced robotics capabilities with Magnet Defense’s cutting-edge autonomous navigation technologies.” He further articulated the companies’ shared vision: to deploy highly capable unmanned vessels that will significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of U.S. forces and their allies in challenging future conflict scenarios.
Echoing this sentiment, Mark Bell, CEO of Magnet Defense, emphasized the powerful synergies anticipated from the collaboration. “By combining Hanwha’s advanced weapons systems with our innovative vessel design expertise, we are poised to create unparalleled autonomous naval solutions,” Bell commented, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the partnership.
