South Korean aerospace giant, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Ltd., announced Thursday the successful completion of delivery for six additional T-50i advanced trainer jets to Indonesia.
This recent shipment of T-50i aircraft fulfills a contract KAI signed with the Indonesian Air Force in 2021, with deliveries commencing earlier this February.
KAI, a leading aircraft manufacturer, initially secured a deal in 2011 to supply 16 T-50 trainer jets to Indonesia. With these latest deliveries, the total number of T-50i advanced jet trainers provided to Indonesia now stands at 22.
Notably, Indonesia holds the distinction of being the inaugural overseas customer for the T-50i, which is the export variant of South Korea’s pioneering homegrown supersonic jet trainer.
Overall, the Southeast Asian nation has significantly bolstered its air force capabilities by acquiring a total of 42 South Korean-made aircraft, encompassing 20 KT-1 trainer jets in addition to the T-50i fleet.
This robust defense partnership between South Korea and Indonesia continues to strengthen, further exemplified by Indonesia’s active participation in the joint development project for South Korea’s indigenous KF-21 fighter jet.
