Daewoo Engineering & Construction, a leading Korean builder, is significantly expanding its strategic presence in Indonesia with an innovative “all-in-one” development model. This comprehensive approach integrates the construction of cutting-edge small modular reactors (SMRs), liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) data centers to meet Indonesia’s growing energy and digital infrastructure demands.

According to the company’s announcement on Monday, Daewoo E&C Chairman Jung Won-ju recently concluded a successful five-day visit to Indonesia last week. During his trip, Chairman Jung engaged in high-level discussions with key senior government officials, influential lawmakers, and prominent business leaders, focusing on fostering robust bilateral cooperation and exploring new development opportunities.

In pivotal meetings with Sugeng Suparwoto, Chair of Indonesia’s House Commission XII, which oversees crucial energy affairs, and Todotua Pasaribu, Vice Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries, Chairman Jung introduced a groundbreaking proposal. He outlined the concept of concurrently developing essential power plant infrastructure, including modern SMRs and efficient LNG terminals, alongside large-scale, gigawatt-capacity AI data centers. This unique strategy leverages Daewoo E&C’s extensive accumulated experience and advanced technological capabilities across these critical sectors, aiming to provide a holistic solution for Indonesia’s future energy and digital needs.

Daewoo E&C reported a highly positive reception from Indonesian officials, who expressed strong support for this integrated development concept. They also pledged their commitment to facilitating and advancing related projects, signaling a strong willingness for collaborative efforts.

Beyond energy and digital infrastructure, Chairman Jung also explored broader cooperation avenues in investment-led developments, including innovative new city projects. Discussions with Pandu Sjahrir, Chief Investment Officer of Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara, yielded mutual agreement on the significant potential for future collaborations. Both parties committed to ongoing engagement in identifying specific projects and ensuring sustained cooperation.

Indonesia stands as one of Daewoo E&C’s most vital overseas markets. Since its entry in 1986, the esteemed Korean builder has successfully completed seven major projects, totaling approximately $540 million. These include diverse ventures in building construction, industrial facilities, and plant engineering, such as the prominent District 8 mixed-use development and the critical Tangguh LNG Expansion Phase 2 project, showcasing Daewoo E&C’s proven expertise in the region.

The company’s deep commitment to Indonesia was further underscored by Chairman Jung’s meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in May 2025, highlighting Daewoo E&C’s strategic push to significantly expand its local business footprint. Furthermore, Daewoo E&C previously solidified its intent by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sinarmas Land and Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation for collaboration on the ambitious Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) new town development project.

“Indonesia represents a core strategic market for Daewoo E&C, offering tremendous growth potential,” stated a Daewoo E&C official. “We are dedicated to becoming a trusted, long-term partner, contributing significantly to the country’s sustainable growth across various essential sectors. This includes not only transformative real estate and urban development projects but also critical energy infrastructure, advanced LNG plants, and next-generation AI data centers, supporting Indonesia’s journey towards a sustainable and digitally empowered future.”
