Daewoo Engineering & Construction has proudly announced the completion of a crucial 62-kilometer highway, strategically linking Iraq’s new Al-Faw Port with Um Qasr. This landmark achievement significantly advances Iraq’s national infrastructure goals, solidifying its ambition to become a premier logistics hub connecting the Middle East and Europe.

The successful delivery of this $440 million design-and-build project was officially recognized with a performance certificate from the General Company for Ports of Iraq, underscoring Daewoo E&C’s commitment to excellence and timely execution.

Commencing construction in August 2021 and finalized in May 2025, the project seamlessly transitioned into its one-year defects liability period, a testament to robust quality assurance.

This modern highway, featuring a four-lane dual carriageway, two sophisticated bridges, one essential interchange, and three efficient roundabouts, represents the vital inaugural section of Iraq’s ambitious state-led Development Road. This transformative initiative is designed to position Iraq as a pivotal transit corridor, enhancing trade and connectivity across the region.

Demonstrating advanced engineering prowess, Daewoo E&C implemented innovative construction methodologies specifically adapted for challenging ground conditions. The application of inverse reliability analysis, utilizing real-time data, further optimized safety and enhanced cost efficiency throughout the project.

Despite confronting significant obstacles, including global supply chain disruptions exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and regional instability hindering cross-border logistics, Daewoo E&C showcased exceptional resilience. Proactive measures such as securing critical materials in advance, expanding storage capacities, and deploying specialized overseas personnel and proprietary equipment effectively minimized potential delays.

This achievement further strengthens Daewoo E&C’s deep involvement in Iraq’s strategic development. The company has now successfully undertaken nine major projects at Al-Faw Port alone, accumulating a substantial combined contract value of $3.7 billion, cementing its role as a key partner in Iraq’s comprehensive port infrastructure expansion.

A Daewoo E&C official emphasized, “This project unequivocally showcases our capability to deliver high-quality, safe, and critical infrastructure, even amidst the most demanding external environments. Leveraging our profound engineering expertise, we are dedicated to expanding our footprint in large-scale infrastructure ventures across the dynamic Middle East region, contributing to sustainable growth and connectivity.”
