SAN DIEGO — Samsung Biologics is significantly advancing its research and development initiatives, aiming to solidify its leadership in the highly competitive **Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) market**. This strategic push involves harnessing cutting-edge **proprietary platforms**, exploring **next-generation biologic modalities**, and making targeted **technology investments** to drive future growth.

During a press conference at the prestigious **BIO International Convention** in San Diego on Wednesday, Jeong Hyeong-nam, Chief of Samsung Biologics’ Bio R&D Center, underscored the center’s primary mission. “Our most crucial task at the **Samsung Biologics Bio R&D Center** is to bolster the core technologies that underpin our **contract development business**,” Jeong stated, highlighting the commitment to technological excellence.

He further elaborated on their focused areas: “We are actively advancing critical technologies, including **high-titer antibody-producing cell lines**, **continuous manufacturing processes**, and exploring diverse **biologics modalities** to meet evolving industry demands.”

In line with these advancements, Samsung Biologics has successfully developed two key proprietary platforms: **S-CHOice**, a **high-productivity cell line platform**, and **S-AfuCHO**, specifically designed for **afucosylated antibody-producing cell line development**. Jeong emphasized that these innovative platforms are engineered to significantly benefit clients by **shortening development timelines**, **reducing manufacturing costs**, and substantially **improving overall productivity** in biopharmaceutical production.

Jeong affirmed the company’s continuous innovation, stating, “We are **constantly upgrading S-CHOice**.” Acknowledging the intense **CDMO competition**, he added, “The competitive landscape among **CDMO firms** is indeed very fierce, and we are dedicated to developing models that consistently outperform our rivals, ensuring superior results for our partners.”

Remarkably, internal case studies conducted by Samsung Biologics have demonstrated that these advanced platforms achieve productivity levels approximately **twice that of conventional biopharmaceutical manufacturing approaches**, showcasing their significant efficiency gains.

Beyond optimizing core manufacturing processes, Samsung Biologics, a recognized **CDMO leader**, is actively broadening its **in-house antibody platform portfolio**. This expansion includes the innovative **S-DUAL platform**, engineered for precise **heavy-chain and light-chain pairing**, which ensures **high purity** and significantly **improved manufacturability** of complex antibodies. The company highlighted that **preclinical studies** using S-DUAL have already shown promising results, demonstrating favorable efficacy in both **gastric and breast cancer models** alongside low immunogenicity, indicating its therapeutic potential.

Furthermore, Samsung Biologics is deeply invested in pioneering **next-generation Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) technologies**. By strategically leveraging the **S-DUAL platform** and its other robust antibody platforms, the company’s objective is to develop advanced **bispecific ADCs**. These are designed to circumvent key limitations observed in conventional **monospecific ADCs**, such as restricted efficacy and problematic **dose-limiting toxicities**, thereby enhancing therapeutic potential.

Jeong also revealed the Bio R&D Center’s intensified focus on **developing and refining emerging treatment modalities**, including advanced **adeno-associated virus (AAV)**, **vector RNA**, and **mRNA technologies**. Crucially, Samsung Biologics intends to **monetize** select **proprietary technologies** through strategic **licensing agreements**, thereby establishing diverse **additional revenue streams** that complement its foundational **CDMO business**.

Reiterating the company’s vision, Jeong stated, “Our strong **technological competitiveness** will serve as the bedrock for supporting Samsung Biologics’ strategic **business expansion** and ensuring robust **future growth** within the biopharmaceutical sector.”

Established in July 2022, Samsung Biologics’ dedicated **Bio R&D Center** plays a pivotal role in **technology scouting** and driving **business development**. This is significantly facilitated through the **Samsung Life Science Fund**, a powerful investment vehicle that has launched three distinct funds since 2021. With a substantial total of 442 billion won (approximately $286.4 million), these funds strategically target high-growth sectors such as **Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs)**, **gene editing**, **RNA therapeutics**, **advanced drug delivery systems**, and **artificial intelligence (AI)** applications in life sciences.
