South Korean stocks demonstrated remarkable resilience, opening higher on Wednesday even as US semiconductor shares faced significant sell-offs on global markets.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged, initially climbing 1.86 percent before further advancing by 267.56 points, or 3.26 percent, to reach 8,471.4 by 9:15 a.m. This robust performance signals strong investor confidence in the South Korean market.

This positive local momentum contrasted sharply with Wall Street’s overnight performance. Major US stock indices closed lower, primarily driven by steep declines in memory chip and semiconductor stocks, which dampened investor sentiment amidst growing concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

Specifically, the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a marginal dip of 0.09 percent, the S&P 500 decreased by 1.44 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell by 2.21 percent.

Despite the global tech downturn, major South Korean market heavyweights in Seoul commenced trading with strong gains.

Market bellwether SK hynix climbed 4.23 percent, with its chipmaking rival Samsung Electronics experiencing an even more significant rise of 7.26 percent. These leading semiconductor companies showed remarkable strength.

Adding to this positive trend, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, an electronic components manufacturing affiliate of Samsung Electronics, also saw a robust increase of 3.37 percent.
