Former Enhypen member reflects on authenticity, creative freedom after launching his solo career
Evan, the artist formerly known as Heeseung of Enhypen, has shared his initial thoughts on life as a solo artist following the release of his debut single “Ride or Die” on Monday.
While he did not directly address the reasons for his departure from the boy group to pursue an independent career — a move some fans continue to debate, suggesting Belift Lab may have influenced his decision — Evan indicated his primary focus is on discovering his authentic self through his music.
In a written Q&A session released by Belift Lab on the same day, Evan reflected on his deepest aspirations at this current stage of his career.
“It may sound a bit philosophical, but I believe life is a journey of finding one’s true self,” he stated. “As I continue to create music, I anticipate discovering the most genuine version of who I am.”
Belift Lab described Evan’s new release as a significant opportunity to showcase his “deep creative capabilities.” He played a pivotal role in writing, composing, and producing both tracks on the single, in addition to contributing to its overall visual creative direction.
The debut single features two distinct digital tracks that highlight contrasting aspects of his musical identity: the alternative rock main track “Ride or Die” and the easy-listening indie-pop B-side “Overflow.”
Evan revealed that “Ride or Die” was inspired by captivating videos of rock bands performing live that he encountered on social media.
“Watching them, I felt, ‘This is pure music in its rawest form,'” he explained. “That experience sparked my desire to create similar music. ‘Ride or Die’ evolved from adding elements that could make that musical style even more enjoyable. I approached it with the mindset of pursuing what I truly wanted to do, free from worries or concerns.”
The solo artist noted that the two songs collectively offer a clear glimpse into the artistic direction he intends to explore as an independent musician.
“I aimed for the two tracks to evoke entirely different feelings,” he said. “In essence, these represent the genres I aspire to create, and the genres I believe I can execute well. I consider that kind of alternativeness to be integral to my identity.”
He further added that the entire project carries a profound message of comfort and hope.
“I sincerely hope that many people can discover hope and comfort through this single,” Evan expressed. “Just as the music of artists I admired provided solace for me, I hope my music can become more than just hope for someone — perhaps even a reason to continue living.”
When questioned about his desired achievements for the release, Evan emphasized that recognition for the music itself holds greater importance than commercial success.
“The feedback I long to hear most is simply that the songs are genuinely good,” he shared. “If even one person finds comfort through my music in any capacity, I would feel truly satisfied.”
Evan is scheduled to promote his new single through a series of engaging performances, including “The Fillin’ Live with Evan,” which marks his first-ever busking event along the scenic Han River. He is also slated to appear at the highly anticipated 2026 Busan One Asia Festival and KCON LA 2026.
“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to all the fans who have patiently waited,” he conveyed. “Never once have I created music solely for my personal desires; it has always been for my fans. I composed these songs thinking, ‘My fans will truly enjoy this.’ I hope you experience them with that sentiment in mind. I’ve also meticulously prepared for the upcoming performances, so please look forward to them.”
