Recording Academy Introduces ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance’ Among Five New Grammy Categories for 2027 Awards, Bolstering Asian Artists’ Recognition

K-pop sensation BTS is potentially closer than ever to clinching their first coveted Grammy Award, following the Recording Academy’s recent announcement of five new categories set to debut at the 2027 ceremony. Among these significant additions is a highly anticipated category specifically dedicated to Asian pop music.

The newly introduced ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance’ award aims to celebrate outstanding achievements in Asian pop music by artists originating from Asia or those prominently recognized within Asian music markets. This groundbreaking category instantly positions global phenomenon BTS as a formidable frontrunner, a testament to the group’s unparalleled global commercial success and immense cultural influence.

Indeed, very few Asian acts can currently rival BTS’s extraordinary track record in terms of chart-topping performance, massive touring scale, or unparalleled international visibility. The K-pop powerhouse recently made history by becoming the first K-pop act to secure the ‘Artist of the Year’ award at the American Music Awards for a second consecutive time, solidifying their status as one of the most commercially successful musical acts to emerge from Asia.

However, a crucial eligibility requirement set forth by the Recording Academy could significantly influence which BTS songs are ultimately submitted for consideration. According to the academy’s guidelines, entries must demonstrate “meaningful use” of at least one Asian language. This stipulation mandates that an Asian language must feature prominently enough to be distinctly identifiable within the recording, requiring bilingual or multilingual tracks to incorporate substantial use of the designated language to qualify.

Consequently, this specific language requirement would likely render BTS’s English-language single “Swim,” which serves as the main track from the group’s fifth studio album “Arirang,” ineligible for submission in this new category.

Instead, industry observers widely anticipate that Hybe, BTS’s management company, will strategically consider various Korean-language album tracks for submission. “Body to Body,” for instance, has been frequently cited as a strong potential candidate, owing to its authentic Korean lyrics and robust, performance-oriented production.

The Recording Academy further clarified that eligible recordings should embody musical characteristics frequently associated with contemporary Asian pop. These include innovative genre-blending arrangements, sophisticated layered production techniques, and dynamic structural transitions designed to enhance both the audio recording and live performance aspects. Given BTS’s renowned reputation for intricate production and spectacular large-scale performances, these criteria could significantly bolster their competitive position within the new category.

Concurrently, Hybe is also anticipated to continue its pursuit of nominations in major general-field and established pop categories with “Swim,” recognizing its status as the album’s most significant commercial success. However, submitting “Swim” to highly competitive categories such as ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ would undoubtedly pit the group against an array of significantly stronger and more established international competitors.

Among the early favorites already being frequently discussed by awards commentators and prediction forums for other major categories are “Stateside” by PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson, alongside “The Light of a Showgirl” by Taylor Swift featuring Sabrina Carpenter.

Renowned music critic Lim Hee-yun asserts that the introduction of this new category substantially enhances BTS’s prospects of finally securing a coveted Grammy Award, even acknowledging that the group’s journey in the major general-field categories will likely remain challenging.

“BTS’s chances of achieving a win will undoubtedly increase significantly as they will now be competing within a dedicated Asian music sphere,” Lim elaborated. “While this award might not fall under the prestigious general-field categories, for countless Koreans and global fans, the paramount achievement is simply winning a Grammy itself. Securing a victory in any of the major general categories has always been an exceptionally difficult feat.”
