Anthropic’s Claude Surpasses Google Gemini in South Korea’s Generative AI App Market

Anthropic’s Claude has achieved a significant milestone, overtaking Google’s Gemini to become the second-highest-grossing generative artificial intelligence (AI) application on Apple’s App Store in South Korea. This notable shift challenges a market order long dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Gemini, signaling a dynamic change in the competitive landscape of leading AI services.

Rapid Revenue Growth and Market Position

According to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, from January 1 to June 5, Claude ranked No. 2 in revenue among all generative AI apps available in Korea. The platform also recorded the fastest revenue growth among major AI applications during this period, highlighting its accelerating market penetration and user adoption.

Until mid-March, the South Korean generative AI app market had largely been a two-way race between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. However, Claude notably surpassed Gemini on March 23, and the revenue gap between the two services has consistently widened since, showcasing Anthropic’s growing influence.

Key Drivers Behind Claude’s Ascendance and Revenue Surge

Anthropic’s impressive momentum is largely attributed to a series of strategic model upgrades rolled out this year. These include advanced versions like Claude Opus 4.8, Mythos Preview, and Claude Fable 5. These enhancements have significantly strengthened Claude’s reputation for high-end AI performance, positioning it as a serious challenger to established players in the premium AI segment.

Claude’s revenue growth experienced a sharp acceleration in early May. On May 5, the app generated approximately $104,000 in daily revenue in South Korea, marking an all-time high and more than doubling its performance from the previous day.

Sensor Tower’s analysis suggests this surge was primarily driven by existing users converting to paid subscriptions or upgrading to more advanced, higher-tier plans, rather than a sudden influx of new users. Download figures for the app remained broadly stable over the same period, reinforcing the notion of deeper engagement from its current user base.

Expanding Web Presence and Work-Oriented User Base

Beyond its strong app performance, Claude is also making significant inroads on the web. From March to May, Sensor Tower data indicates that Claude’s website outpaced both ChatGPT and Gemini in terms of visitor growth, demonstrating its expanding reach across different platforms.

The usage patterns reveal that Claude is cultivating a distinctly more work-oriented user base. A notable 58.8 percent of Claude users accessed the service exclusively through its website. This figure is substantially higher compared to ChatGPT’s 22 percent and Gemini’s 34.9 percent, indicating a strong preference for web-based access among its users for professional applications.

“Claude’s high share of web users underscores its increasing penetration into productivity-centered work use cases, solidifying its position as a valuable tool for professional applications,” stated Sensor Tower.

South Korea: A Crucial Market for Global AI Services

South Korea has emerged as one of the most vital overseas markets for major global AI services. During the survey period, the United States accounted for the largest share of Claude’s revenue at 41.1 percent, with South Korea following as the second-largest contributor at 4.7 percent.

For OpenAI’s ChatGPT, South Korea was the third-largest revenue market globally, behind the US and Japan. Similarly, for Google’s Gemini, South Korea ranked second after Japan, contributing a significant 14.5 percent of its total revenue. These figures collectively underscore the strategic importance and high adoption rate of generative AI technologies within the South Korean market, making it a key battleground for leading AI companies.
