LG Energy Solution, Sunwoda Settle Patent Dispute Via Licensing

LG Energy Solution, Sunwoda Settle Patent Dispute Via Licensing

LG Energy Solution has successfully concluded a significant two-year legal dispute with Chinese battery manufacturer Sunwoda by entering into a comprehensive patent licensing agreement. This landmark deal covers LG Energy Solution’s advanced lithium-ion battery technologies, marking a pivotal resolution for the South Korean industry leader.

Tulip Innovation, the entity responsible for managing and licensing key lithium-ion battery patents for both LG Energy Solution and Japan’s Panasonic Energy, formally announced the licensing deal with Sunwoda on Thursday.

The terms of the agreement stipulate the withdrawal of all ongoing legal actions between the parties across Germany, China, and South Korea. Crucially, this settlement effectively addresses all existing patent-related concerns regarding Sunwoda and its customers’ utilization of battery technologies developed by LG Energy Solution and Panasonic Energy.

While the companies refrained from disclosing the specific financial terms of the agreement, they confirmed that all conditions would remain confidential.

This settlement brings an effective end to the extensive series of patent infringement lawsuits initiated by LG Energy Solution against Sunwoda, recognized as one of China’s prominent lithium-ion battery manufacturers.

The two battery giants had been embroiled in complex legal disputes since 2024. Through Tulip Innovation, LG Energy Solution filed lawsuits in a German court, asserting that Sunwoda had infringed upon several of its critical patents, notably those related to the electrode assembly structure. By 2025, the German court had sided with Tulip Innovation on all three contested patents, leading to an injunction prohibiting the sale of Sunwoda batteries within Germany.

The dispute subsequently escalated and extended into South Korea. In January, the Korea Trade Commission commenced an investigation into alleged unfair trade practices concerning electric vehicles utilizing Sunwoda batteries, specifically mentioning models like the Volvo EX30 and Renault Grand Koleos. This action followed a formal complaint lodged by Tulip Innovation.

Further demonstrating its commitment to patent protection, LG Energy Solution sought a preliminary injunction against Volvo Car Korea in March. The basis for this was the allegation that the Sunwoda batteries incorporated into the Volvo EX30 infringed upon LG Energy Solution’s proprietary patents.

Consistent with the resolution, LG Energy Solution is anticipated to withdraw all trade-related legal actions previously pursued within South Korea.

LG Energy Solution hailed the agreement as a robust validation of its unwavering commitment to protecting intellectual property and ensuring fair compensation for its substantial technological innovations.

In a company statement, LG Energy Solution emphasized, “This agreement powerfully reaffirms the fundamental principle that companies devoted to technological innovation deserve fair compensation for their invaluable contributions.” The statement further added, “As an original innovator instrumental in driving the remarkable growth of the global battery industry, we remain dedicated to fostering a healthy and equitable industrial ecosystem where competition thrives on fairness.”
