LG Energy Solution Secures $1.6B Deal with DTE Energy for AI Data Center and Grid Expansion Amid Soaring Computing Demand

LG Energy Solution has announced its second significant US energy storage system (ESS) battery supply agreement, strategically positioning itself to meet the escalating power demands from advanced artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and critical grid infrastructure. This move also highlights the company’s diversification efforts amid a slower period in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

On Thursday, LG Energy Solution confirmed a substantial $1.6 billion contract with Michigan-based utility leader DTE Energy. This two-year agreement will see LG supply 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of ESS batteries, primarily manufactured at its Holland, Michigan plant. Operational since June last year, this facility holds the distinction of being North America’s first large-scale ESS battery production site.

The partnership dictates that DTE Energy will deploy LG Energy Solution’s state-of-the-art ESS batteries across eight vital grid infrastructure projects. Notably, these deployments include support for Oracle’s new AI data center development located in Saline Township, Michigan.

An industry insider indicated that LG Energy Solution’s role will be pivotal in bolstering OpenAI’s infrastructure, given the immense and continuous computing power required by the US tech giant’s AI models. By supplying grid-scale ESS batteries through its collaboration with DTE Energy, LG is directly enabling partners like Oracle to build massive AI data centers that demand substantial and highly reliable energy supplies.

LG Energy Solution’s advanced high-nickel batteries are poised to significantly enhance power network stability, facilitate the storage of surplus electricity, and ensure consistent, reliable energy delivery for the critical infrastructure supporting Oracle’s AI facilities, which in turn power OpenAI’s operations.

As Michigan’s foremost electricity provider and a prominent utility company nationwide, DTE Energy serves approximately 2.3 million electricity customers and 1.3 million natural gas customers across southeastern Michigan’s key urban and industrial areas. The company has recently intensified its investments in grid modernization while actively expanding its renewable energy initiatives and strategic partnerships within the technology infrastructure sector.

Responding to the rapidly increasing need for stable and robust power supplies for AI data centers, LG Energy Solution has proactively recalibrated its North American strategy. This strategic pivot involves shifting focus from an EV-centric battery supply model towards significantly expanding its ESS production capabilities.

Currently, LG Energy Solution boasts a robust North American footprint with five major ESS production bases either operating or under construction. These include facilities in Holland and Lansing, Michigan, a former joint venture plant with Stellantis in Canada, a joint venture factory with GM in Tennessee, and another joint venture facility with Honda in Ohio.

Simultaneously, the company is accelerating its portfolio diversification. This includes plans to convert the Tennessee plant to produce more cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries specifically for diverse ESS applications.

By the close of this year, LG Energy Solution aims to expand its global ESS production capacity to over 60 GWh. A significant portion, exceeding 50 GWh, will be allocated to North America, underscoring the company’s commitment to strengthening its local supply competitiveness in the region.

As of 2025, the battery manufacturer had already secured ESS orders totaling approximately 140 GWh. Factoring in the recent deal with DTE Energy and an additional 5 GWh supply agreement with Hanwha Qcells, LG’s ESS contracts signed this year alone have reached a combined 11 GWh, valued at an estimated 3.4 trillion won (approximately $2.26 billion).

According to research from BloombergNEF, electricity consumption by US data centers is projected to more than double, soaring from 180 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the past year to a staggering 391 TWh by 2030, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced energy infrastructure.

Park Jae-hong, head of LG Energy Solution Vertech, emphasized the company’s vision, stating, “Through our dedicated localization strategy and continuous expansion within North America’s ESS sector, we are committed to supporting regional grid stability, fostering job creation, and driving overall market growth.”
