SK Bioscience, a leading vaccine developer, announced a significant agreement with VECOL, Colombia’s state-run producer of animal health and biotechnology products, on Tuesday. This landmark partnership focuses on vaccine technology transfer and fostering local manufacturing capabilities within Colombia’s national vaccine localization initiative.

This ambitious project, spearheaded jointly by Colombia’s Health Ministry, National Health Institute, and VECOL, is designed to bolster the nation’s vaccine self-sufficiency and enhance public health preparedness. It is supported by a substantial government investment plan, committing $260 million over the next decade to achieve these critical goals.

Under the terms of this strategic agreement, VECOL will play a central role in the overall project execution. Its responsibilities include overseeing the construction and operation of new facilities, navigating regulatory approvals, and ensuring seamless coordination with key public health authorities across Colombia.

SK Bioscience will serve as the expert technology transfer and manufacturing partner. The company will provide invaluable expertise across all phases, from facility development and advanced vaccine production techniques to navigating complex regulatory processes and ensuring efficient operational management.

The company’s highly effective proprietary varicella vaccine, known as SkyVaricella, has been selected as the inaugural product for this crucial technology transfer. SK Bioscience also indicated that this collaborative partnership holds potential for future expansion, encompassing additional vaccine products to further strengthen Colombia’s pharmaceutical independence.

The Korean vaccine manufacturer emphasizes that this transformative project is expected to significantly strengthen Colombia’s domestic vaccine production capabilities. Furthermore, it aims to support and ensure more stable vaccine supplies not only within Colombia but also across the broader Latin American region, contributing to regional health security.

“This agreement marks a truly transformative step for Colombia’s scientific and technological capabilities within the biotechnology sector,” stated Lucia Ayala, President of VECOL, highlighting the long-term impact of the collaboration.

Ahn Jae-yong, CEO of SK Bioscience, affirmed the company’s commitment, stating their objective is to contribute robustly to future pandemic preparedness efforts and establish a resilient, sustainable vaccine supply network throughout Latin America.

“We are dedicated to leveraging our profound expertise in advanced vaccine development and efficient manufacturing processes, combined with our extensive global partnership experience, to wholeheartedly support this vital initiative,” Ahn concluded.
