Celebrating a significant milestone, Posco recently marked the 22nd anniversary of its impactful free meal program, a vital initiative supporting senior citizens living alone and individuals with disabilities. This landmark occasion was commemorated with a special volunteer meal service event held at the Songrim Senior Welfare Center in Pohang.

Since its inception in 2004 with the launch of ‘Nanum House’ (House of Sharing), Posco has steadfastly expanded its reach, now operating five dedicated meal centers across Pohang and Gwangyang. These centers collectively provide nourishing meals to approximately 903 individuals daily, accumulating an impressive total of 4.16 million meals served over two decades.

Beyond simply providing sustenance, these Posco-supported centers have blossomed into vibrant community hubs. They offer elderly residents a welcoming environment to gather, socialize, and actively combat social isolation, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being.

The recent volunteer event took place in Songdo-dong, a district with a deep-rooted connection to Posco’s community commitment. It’s the very area where Posco’s renowned steelmaking division at Pohang Steelworks forged a sisterhood partnership back in 1994, diligently conducting community outreach and social contribution efforts for over three decades.

Demonstrating hands-on leadership and corporate commitment, Posco President Lee Hee-geun personally joined the service, distributing meals to the senior citizens and offering words of encouragement to the dedicated volunteers, underscoring the program’s significance.

Further enhancing the event, acclaimed Chef Lee Mi-young, widely recognized for her appearance on the Netflix cooking show “Culinary Class Wars,” collaborated with Posco volunteers. She meticulously prepared special, nutritious meals, adding an extra touch of culinary excellence and care for all attendees.

Reflecting on the deeper meaning of the initiative, Chef Lee shared, “Food is more than something that simply satisfies hunger. It is a profound way to connect people through warmth and care. Preparing these heartfelt meals alongside Posco employees allowed me to once again reflect on the invaluable essence of sharing and community spirit.”

Beyond its enduring meal programs, Posco actively orchestrates a diverse array of customized corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These programs specifically target other vulnerable community groups, including children, multicultural families, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring broad and inclusive support.

Notably, Posco demonstrated unwavering commitment during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. The company adapted its food assistance programs, providing essential lunch boxes and ready-to-eat meals to vulnerable communities, thereby minimizing disruptions and ensuring continuous support during a critical time.

Concluding with a forward-looking statement, CEO Lee Hee-geun affirmed Posco’s unwavering dedication: “Posco will continue to lead by example, embodying the profound value of sharing and serving as a steadfast, reliable supporter for our local communities, ensuring a brighter future for all.”
