Embrace the “Clean Skin” Revolution: K-Beauty Pioneers Skincare-Infused Makeup for a Healthier Glow

The quest for radiant, healthy skin, often achieved through meticulous skincare routines, has always been a cornerstone of Korean cosmetics. Now, K-beauty is redefining complexion products, ushering in a new era where makeup seamlessly doubles as advanced skincare. This burgeoning trend prioritizes nourishing formulations and skin health over heavy coverage.
Today’s beauty consumers expect their makeup to actively care for the skin, not just conceal imperfections. This shift is leading to the decline of thick foundations in favor of sheer, breathable formulas packed with potent active ingredients, aligning with the global demand for clean beauty.
This growing preference for skincare-infused complexion products and dedicated “skin prep” categories is fueling a significant surge in K-beauty exports. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korean cosmetics exports reached a record $3.1 billion in the first quarter, underscoring the global appeal of these innovative beauty solutions.
The Resurgence of BB Cream: Beauty Balm for Modern Skincare Needs
The remarkable revival of BB cream, originally known as blemish balm, serves as a clear indicator of evolving beauty standards. Fortune Business Insights projects the global BB cream market to grow substantially, from $5.03 billion in 2025 to an impressive $10.58 billion by 2034, highlighting its renewed popularity.
First formulated in Germany to soothe and protect skin post-dermatological procedures, BB cream gained immense traction in Korea in the early 2000s as a revolutionary shortcut to a flawless, polished complexion.
Modern BB creams, now more aptly termed “beauty balms,” are increasingly formulated like advanced skincare products rather than traditional makeup. They have shed their former gray undertones and heavy textures, offering natural-looking coverage combined with intense hydration, essential built-in sun protection, and powerful anti-aging properties.
Leading this new wave is Missha, a brand that has remarkably topped Amazon’s US BB cream charts. This resurgence is particularly notable for a brand whose road shop prominence had waned since its peak in the 2010s.
Missha’s iconic product, recognized by its distinctive purple tube, incorporates a blend of probiotics and a “superfood complex” of vegetables and botanicals. This innovative tint delivers significant antioxidant benefits and comprehensive skin nourishment.
The brand’s recent success, particularly in the US market, is attributed to its skin-friendly formula and widespread viral social media endorsements, including a notable shout-out from US rapper Cardi B, who credited the product as her secret to achieving a natural, makeup-free look.
Able C&C, Missha’s operator, reported a significant increase in international sales, climbing to 70 percent of total revenue in the first quarter, up from 52 percent a year prior. Overall revenue for the company rose 10.2 percent to 61.4 billion won ($40.8 million). US sales alone saw a staggering 230 percent increase year-over-year, driven by accelerated sales on platforms like TikTok Shop and Amazon, alongside an expanded presence through Costco.
A company official commented, “The success of BB creams in North America is more than just about sales. It signifies that BB cream, a signature K-beauty category, has successfully transitioned from a niche product to a mainstream beauty staple.”
Other leading brands are also making significant strides in this reinvigorated category. Amorepacific’s espoir quickly ascended to the top of Olive Young’s BB cream charts within a month of its launch, focusing on strengthening the skin barrier for sensitive and acne-prone skin. D’Alba Global maintains its commitment to vegan principles, featuring its signature truffle-derived ingredient in its formulations.
Industry experts observe a fundamental shift in consumer preferences for complexion products. “In the past, products primarily aimed to lighten skin tone. However, recent innovations are increasingly designed to enhance the inherent health of the skin itself,” an industry official stated. “The new frontier is how closely a product can mimic the performance of an anti-aging serum or a nourishing lotion.”

‘Skin Prep’: The Essential New K-Beauty Category for Flawless Application
Even for dedicated makeup users, attention is now firmly focused on the initial steps applied to the skin. This “skin prep” category represents the next significant opportunity for K-beauty companies, creating a vital bridge between skincare and makeup.
Neither purely skincare nor traditional makeup, skin prep products are meticulously formulated to optimize the skin’s canvas before makeup application. They hydrate, smooth texture, regulate oil production, and boost radiance, ensuring that subsequent makeup layers apply more seamlessly, last longer, and look more natural.
Shinsegae International’s acclaimed skincare brand, Yunjac, is widely credited with pioneering this crucial category, having introduced a groundbreaking product in 2019 that significantly improved foundation adhesion and imparted a luminous, lasting finish.
Since then, “skin prep” has evolved into an industry-wide term encompassing a range of products, including skin balms, tone-up creams, and sun serums. Yunjac’s extensive lineup reflects this segmentation, offering variations specifically targeting a pearl-like glow, alongside others focused on effective oil control and pore-blurring benefits.
“By completing our comprehensive base prep lineup, we aim to solidify our leadership as the original brand that innovated and pioneered the skin prep category,” a company official affirmed.
This influential trend is also successfully expanding globally, with Yunjac recently making its debut in Chinese offline retail through prominent WOW Colour stores, showcasing its international appeal.
Shinsegae International’s cosmetics division reported a record-breaking first quarter, with sales reaching 124 billion won. The company highlighted that its skin prep lineup alone experienced an impressive 118 percent growth last year, demonstrating its rapid market traction.
Other prominent brands are rapidly entering this dynamic space. VDL, operated by LG Household & Health Care, leverages plant-based PDRN to enhance skin luminosity, while Laneige focuses its efforts on advanced pore-blurring and intense hydration.
Industry observers predict that these innovative skin prep products are likely to follow the successful trajectory of BB creams, particularly at a time when deep nourishment and genuine skin improvement are becoming the ultimate measures of a high-performing beauty product.
While achieving a healthy appearance has always been important, the current priority has shifted to actively promoting healthier skin, even when wearing makeup, underscoring the profound impact of this K-beauty evolution.
